On my 1974 Omega, I accidentally stripped a screw opening on the motor shell housing, which caused the 10-24 x 1/2" screw to fit loosely and thus necessitated the use of a nut, as the first picture shows.

What I want to do, though, is repair that hole by using some kind of spot welder, then drilling a new hole (tapping it 10-24), this way I can use a standard 10-24 x 1/2" oval-head screw again (as seen on my Classic III's motor housing).

How many of you accidentally stripped such screw openings, and what have you done to fix them to make the original screws fit snugly?
