Kirby Heritage II Problem

Just a few minutes ago, I attached the hose to my Heritage II. A few moments later it made a sound like gears grinding and now smells like something is burning.

I don't think I picked anything up; I just attached a nozzle and placed it on the carpet, which had been cleaned about a half-hour earlier.

I hope its nothing serious. I don't really want to invest anymore money into it as it's in fair shape anyway.

Hello Nathaniel.

Based on the limited info. & NOT seeing or hearing it; I'm going to venture to say it's possibly the fan that's 'gone.'

If you L@@K at it as much as you can thru the hole in the fancase, you might be able to see. If it's rubbing, it will melt (burn) the plastic. If the fan had stress cracks, then the high speed probably just finished it off.

Let us know what you find out.

Yep, it's cracked. There are some small cracks on the blades with pet hair stuck in them and a larger one very close to the belt shaft. So I guess the high-speed did it.

What do you suggest I do with the machine? I have no idea how to replace the fan and my local vac shop has a very high repair cost at $50 plus parts. Sell it for parts then?

Hello Nathaniel.

It's really not that hard to replace a fan. I'm sure you could handle it. If you decide to do it yourself, shoot me an email & I will provide you all of my contact info.

It is only: $9.35 + s/h, thru me. [fan Assy/Amodel 119078S]

There is one special tool that really makes it a lot easier to hold the armature. It's only: $2.00. I think it's two dollars well spent. (It is for 1CB thru the 2HD Kirby models.)

If the machine's in good condition, I think you'd agree.

As for what you say they charge, that is really steep. If you were a retail customer coming to me, it's $43.95 + tax installed.

i have a Heritage II service manual in PDF form or JPGs if you need it for reference. (If on facebook join Vacuum Collectors Club and they are in the photo gallery). The fan is not expensive should not be more than $20 shipping included (through Bill or where I buy- Kirbyneeds.com). iF the machine was in good working order otherwise I would suggest fixing it.
