Kirby G3 Hiding in the Church Basement

So I was helping set up for an event at my church yesterday and when we were down in the basement getting tables and chairs, I spotted a Kirby G3 sitting off to one side with some stuff to go into the annual rummage sale.

I didn't have much of an opportunity to look it over, since I needed to stay focused on the task at hand. Still, I keep thinking about it. I already have two Kirbys--a Heritage and a G-Six, and I don't really need a third one, but it looked pretty clean, aside from a few strips of masking tape running up the handle. I'm thinking it might make a good parts machine for my G-Six, but there's also the possibility of making a few bucks on it if the machine's in good shape and the price is right.

I'm not sure whether this is something left over from last year's rummage sale, or if it's one of those items that has mysteriously made its way down there in the off-season. Parishioners have a tendency to drop stuff off for sale whenever they happen to be cleaning out. Since the rummage sale isn't until September, I've got plenty of time to think this over--and even go back down there when time permits and examine the machine a little more closely. But if I decide I want it, I can probably snag it at the volunteers' pre-sale the night before.

There's nothing like a little anticipation...

This would probably be better as a Kirby to service and restore than parts for the later (and improved) Generations.Low milage G-3s can still be found but with use and abuse the problem areas can include cracks on grey fan,weak handle spring,worn rear wheels,cracks in bag fill tube and worn switch unit.All fixable depending on your opinion after a closer look.(We had a local church that had a sale in basement.A customer asked how much a vac (Elux upright) was and bought it.Turned out the janitor had left it sitting outside closet and they had to replace their own vac.)

That's too funny!

Fortunately, I'm pretty sure this isn't a vacuum the church is actively using. They're using a Dirt Devil I rescued from a dumpster and refurbished earlier in the year. Not the greatest vacuum, but the altar guild ladies wanted something for spot cleaning that was light weight and had attachments on board. I think the person who does the heavy duty cleaning brings her own equipment.

Thanks for the check list. I'll definitely be taking a closer look at that G3 before I make any firm decisions.
