Well I picked up this 510 today. It has a black handle grip, and I think, maybe an original cord. The plug ends of the cord are black and angular in an art deco way.

I'm going to buy the head that is on E-bay (meant for another model, but will fit). Unless someone else has one here for sale?

I would like to use this vacuum, so I am wondering...I see that there are replacement cloth Kirby bags that use an F&G paper bag. Perhaps I could split the original bag open along it's seam and fasten it on top of the replacement cloth bag?

Just floating the idea, what do you think?

Also, I have turned the bag and emptor inside out to gently vacuum clean the inside, but now would like to gently wash the bag. How does one separate the bag from the emptor? There seems to be a thick cord?

If you split open that beautiful-condition 60-year-old bag, thus ruining it, there are legions of vacuum collectors who will clamor for your head on a plate!!

OK -- Now for the serious suggestions! LOL!

Guy, I would encourage you to stay with the original bag as it is. That is actually a wire spring that is sewn into the bag. Just use a little gentle pressure to pry it up and then off the Emtor. I personally like the Kirby shake out bag. It is quite easy to empty too. First, put the vacuum on newspaper. Next, put the nozzle all the way down. Unhook the bag from the handle. Then turn on the vacuum to briefly inflate the bag. While holding the bag at the top, turn the vacuum off and shake the bag. That causes the debris to fall into the Emptor. Then open the Emtor tray. Tilt the vacuum slightly to the opposite side and allow the debris to fall onto the newspaper. It's quick and simple. You're supposed to empty it after each use. But I've gotten some vintage machines that were stuffed full! In fact, I just got a 510 that had a rat's nest in it! Anyway, you will REALLY like your vacuum. And please don't do anything to that bag!!! LOL!

Instead of the newspaper gag-and todays newspaper sheets are SMALLER than the ones used in the era that Kirby was used--This was when I lived in an apartment and had a dump bag Kirby-remove the Kirby bag and Emptor assembly from the machine and dump it directly into the apartment trash chute or dumpster-at home dump it into the trash can or trash bag.much better than newspapers.I dumpted mine outside to prevent the dust you just picked up from getting spread into the house again.
