Hi All!

I was given this Kenmore canister from a relative who recently received a new vacuum. The cord winder on it will not retract and I would like to to a complete tear down of the vacuum to fix this, as well as clean it out. She didn't have an owners manual for it and I can't seem to find one that matches the machine online. Its strange to me as it isn't badged 'whisper tone" or "Progressive" anywhere.

I would appreciate any tips and advice on taking this machine apart and getting it closer to it's original condition.

I've never worked on one of this style before but they should have good power. Attached is a link to Sears parts for a schematic on the machine. No user manual but a user manual isn't going to tell you how to fix a cord winder. Chances are you'll need a new cord winder. You can try WD-40 on the spring, if it's accessible. Just be extremely careful those cordwinder springs are extremely tightly wound if it gets out of place, it's gonna go crazy and could slice you up.

The power head for that model I'm fairly certain is like the one pictured below. That's a CenTec CT14DX head. You can spueeze in the 2 sides of the headlight compartment that headlight will come off. From there will be 2 phillips screws to remove, also remove the headlight bulb. Once screws are out, flip over the nozzle and with a flat head screw driver look for arrows on sides to release locking brackets. After releasing locking brackets on both sides, the top cover will come off. The brush roll is most likely geared, but the geared belt will most likely need replacement.

I may be wrong? But I think their more basic machines just say Kenmore.

I did a search for the model number and it's what I thought it is. I call it a "Jellybean Whispertone" but really only the top models with the extra sound insulation said Whispertone on them. But basically these were the models below the Progressives, like the Kenmore Lime and Orange Power Mate canisters sold today. These were made around 2001-2007 or so and there were a few different models and colors over the years. This model uses the PN shown in the post above, later ones used the curved headlight PN like the first generation Progressives had.

As Rob noted you probably need a new cord winder. Not sure if the winders are the same on the Progressives or not. My guess is the spring may be worn out but I'm not sure.

As far as taking the canister apart, you basically start by remove the canister hood by opening it all the way and then the tabs holding it in will pop out. Then you should be able to see the screws that need to be removed to get the motor canopy off. Once you get that off you will probably find that it is quite dusty in there, so I would clean all that out and wash the foam insulation and any foam exhaust filters that are in there before you put it back together.

That is funny! The cord winder is still a little sluggish, but i'm just giving it to another friend who, being honest, won't take any better care of it. They have my Electrolux Super J right now and I want it back. haha
