Kenmore Horizon Find.

I was riding through a neighborhood one lovely day a few weeks ago. I saw signs for an Estate sale, so I went for it. I rode up to this rather large early 60s Ranch house. I said to my self "There HAS to be a vacuum cleaner here, I can SMELL IT!" So I went through this house, and sure enough, shoved into the basement, there was this Kenmore Horizon, for $10.00. I bought it, took her home.....

She is complete with all the peach colored tools, that bare the "K" on each one. Hose, and both wands. This poor thing was just covered in dirt, Dirt that I thought was rust pitting at first, but it all came off, nothing is missing, nothing broken. Just needed a bath and basic service. Even that delicate push switch is still intact.
I did have another Kenmore Horizon, bu the poor thing was just beyond repair, a real rough. So that got parted.

You will note two things, the original plug is still there, I have never seen a plug of a Kenmore Horizon or any of these. also BOTH of the chrome finished ornaments on top of the canister are intact. That seems to not be the case for most. I am pretty pleased with this one.

Such a strange little design, it looks like a backpack vacuum! That rose pink color is pretty cool, just think how many tornadoes it survived hunkered in that basement all its life!

I've never seen one before. About what year would that be from?
1960s...like the house where you found it?

That IS a nice canister, and a most unusual design. IIRC, there was another canister Kenmore offered around the same time called the Saturn. I had a chance at a Saturn at an estate sale not too long ago, but with just the canister (no hose or tools to be found in the house I passed. These were probably made for Sears by Birtman Electric.

Whirlpool product, and it dates from 1959, 1960. The Saturn was part of the same line but either one above, or below the Horizon.

Sixty, The 59 was cream colored and didn't have the direct connect hose, I have a 57 and a 59 Horizon and a 60 Aurora, the atomic looking SR emblem came out in 60, the 60 was the worlds first direct connect electric hose with no cord wrapped around it, just like todays electric hoses, Sears was years ahead of everyone else.

That's a nice machine, good find esp with it being complete. I was wondering do you use wax or other polishing products on your painted vacuums? I've found it really gets the paint back to life and shiny. I like No 7 polish best.

Amazing piece of vacuum cleaner history, Jae. It touches on so many important vacuum cleaner themes: Whirlpool, Sears Kenmore, on board tool caddy, amazing on-board wand storage, space-age theming. Indeed, Whirlpool was an amazing innovator at the time and should be remembered for its contributions to cleaner design.
