I am interested in buying a USED or new vacuum, one that is not a lot of money.

I am interested in either a Hoover elite commercial, or a Hoover breathe easy type.

Would like a Sanitaire, but I need to know about the shake out bag, do they spew dust? Are they nasty?

Any feedback would help.

(I'm new)

If you go Sanitaire I would suggest one that takes an F&G or ST bag setup. They are out there. I don't believe that the shake out bags spew too much, but shaking out the bag when its time will cause quite a storm.

If you're interested in a Sanitaire with shake out style you might be also be interested in a Hoover Professional Decade 800 styled machine. Same concept of fan first system but in a Hoover.

The Hoover Elites are great and clean well. All the above including the Elite come in a 12" width. The Hoover Breathe Easy is a slightly more powerful motor over the Elite and that is needed because its a 15" width.

Are attachments a consideration? Most of the above machines do not come with attachments as they're strictly marketed commercial new. You can find attachment sets for Hoover Decade 800/ Convertibles and adapt to bottom plate of Hoover Commercial Decade/ Guardsman/ Professional styles. Some Commercial Elites have attachments and some don't, it depends on model. The commercial Soft Guards would have attachment. Any residential previous sold model Elite or Breathe Easy would have attachments. eBay, your area Craiglslist or local thrift stores would be good bets to watch and check out for those.

http://greenville.craigslist.org/app/3526968712.html Hoover Breathe Easy Widepath listed in Craigslist ad. Looks like it may need attachments which are easy to order on eBay or local vac shop. Owner says repair may be needed. Could go check it out, probably new brush roll, belt, bag and filter which most any used vac would need anyway. $5 make offer

Hope all of this helps and best of luck! Let me or others know what you're thinking with all of this info which I realize is a lot to absorb. Curious of your input towards attachments, depending on that factor it could definitely sway your decision. Of course if you have a separate canister vacuum then attachnment use is taken care of with that.

I would also heavily recommend a trip to your local vac shop. See what refurbished machines they have and what new machines they have to offer towards Sanitaire, Hoover, Eureka Commercial. Riccar and Simplicity are great machines as well. Local vac shops tend to offer a warranty on their refurbed machines as well. I have a friend who is owner of Vacuums Etc in Columbia, SC. He can definitely help you out! His website is on the link below and he has some specials listed on his Facebook site. He may be willing to ship???? I would definitely contact him and see what he suggests/ recommends and if he ships. Feel free to mention me.

Eureka 1934B

I have one of those, it's a good vacuum.

However, it's not fit for what I want to use it for.

Thank y'all for these suggestions, I'm looking now, keep them coming.

The Carpet

Well, the carpet I will be cleaning, has absolutely no depth. It's just "flat" thick carpet.

And I'll be vacuuming pews. I think the Vibragroomer would do a great job on them. But, I need something to clean the backs of the pews.

If it is just flat carpet I would recommend a used Oreck. Short carpet was what those vacuums were designed for, and I see the lower end models on Craigslist all the time for around $30 or $40. You could probably find a small canister for less than $50 for above floor cleaning.

The C1414 is what I would love to have, little too pricey. I think I'll go with the Elite, w/o attatchements.

I don't care for Orecks, something about their sound has always turned me off.

If they still make Hoover shoulder-vac's I'm sure that'd be nice for above floor cleaning.

The Hoover Commerical Motor is Excellent!

It's the same motor from the High-Performance Convertible days. Those vacuums are quiet and clean like a dream with a fresh bag and brush strips. I didn't realize Hoover was selling the new Guardsman at such a low price, and with HEPA filtration you can't go wrong.

Long story short:

Amps is strictly amount of electricity used. You can't use that number for considering getting a vacuum. Years ago all of those upright vacuum cleaners with the cloth bags behind the handle cleaned carpets very very well and ran at about 4.5-6.5 Amps for the most part.

Then vacuums got cheaper made with a lot of plastic, designs were changed so that uprights became more user friendly with on board tools, and you wouldn't worry about breaking a fan so the clean air design came about. Somewhere in there the vacuum industry decided to fool all consumers and cheapen machines by running motors faster with smaller less efficient single fan motors. They've decided to full consumers into thinking that if you don't buy a 12Amp machine, you're not getting power. Well sorry to say but Amps is just a measure of electricity draw from the motor. It has no effect on agitation or suction otherwise known as air flow for cleaning.

Now your situation of cleaning pews, and flat, dense carpeted, it sounds like you're cleaning a church. I would suggest commercial grade since the vacuum will be working several times a week depending on all the different occasions held. I'm thinking 2 vacuums. One a good, durability upright, something thats easy to manuever. tools on board/ maybe/ maybe not. Would be a benefit if there was so incase you saw something along baseboards, you could quickly stop, grab it and keep going along. Or you could get a separate canister vac. This would have dusting and upholstery nozzle for cleaning your pews. Although, assuming that most pews are wood, I would recommend you using a rag with some Pledge and quickly wiping those pews, to add a little shine and remove finger prints rather than going over every inch with a vacuum dusting brush-- just a thought as it would be a time saver and more thorough.

I've recommended a few vacuums below but I strongly recommend you visit your local vacuum shop and tell them your situation and your budget. Try out a few machines and what would be best for your situation. If your church is dark and lot of people tend to drop pennys, other change, screws, etc. on the floor then a clean air design upright or a canister vacuum would be your best situation so you're not replacing broken fans.
For a good, sturdy well rounded straight carpet vac I would look at the Hoover CH50020. It's disposable bag, large bag capacity, will clean great and be reliable. Or a Sanitaire with disposable bag system. http://www.abcvacuumwarehouse.com/sanitaire-sc888k-commercial-upright.html

For a canister vac for attachment use, I would recommend a Sanitaire S6383 or similar. It's a bigger bag, over the Hoover Portapower and has wheels and carry strip and in my opinion more suction over Hoover Portapower. I like the Hoover but with its smaller bag that loses suction very quick and no wheels, its just not near as convenient for use in a big place like a church. http://www.abcvacuumwarehouse.com/sanitaire-sc3683-commercial-canister.html

For a single vac that's good all around with tools on board at the ready I would go a few options: Hoover Insight- similar to a Sebo but with a few nicer features and better cleaning http://hoover.com/products/details/ch50100/insight-100-13-bagged-upright/

Panasonic http://www.abcvacuumwarehouse.com/panasonic-mc-v5210-commercial.html

or most Riccars and Simplicitys. These machines are built great, most any would be good for your application as well.

Hoover Breath Easy Commercial

I thought that the commercial version of this vacuum was discontinued a long time ago?? Do you guys really think that the website that Durango159 posted actually has it in stock? Or they just haven't updated their website in a long time. It would be really cool if they still had it. I would buy it.

Yeah but what if they haven't updated their website in a long time?? Because that vacuum has been discontinued for a really long time already.
