Hello all of you!
I've been browsing this site for a few years, but never had the gumption to join
until last week. I enjoy looking at your collections. They are great!
I found a really nice 1980 Eureka model 1290A brandywine canned ham powerteam canister at the salvation army store. It cleaned up very nicely and runs excellent.
Now I have both it and the model 1279 also in brandywine color.
I'm old school, not that old though. I am not much for uploading photos, have no smart phone. I have never sent a text message.
I'm not anti social, just very busy.
My other hobby is European model railroading, mostly German. Mainly in winter. I collect Marklin, Roco,Fleischmann, and Piko model trains. My layout is 8 ft. by 6 ft. by 4 ft., well detailed, but by no means a Miniature Wonderland as in Hamburg.
Just a suburban guy here. In summer, I garden a bit. Not vegetables. Roses, clematis, and hydrangeas mostly.
 
Thanks for posting. Those Eureka canisters are nice machines. I used to have an orange one until my stepdaughter killed it and my (now ex-) wife decreed it wasn't worth the trouble to fix because we had a nice, new (plastic POS, in my opinion) Kenmore canister. If I ever saw one like it in good shape for a good price at a thrift shop or somewhere, I'd be sorely tempted to snag it.

Welcome to the club! I hope you'll find as much enjoyment as I have, and find as much help and advice as I have been afforded. I am quite eager to return the karmic favor, so if you ever have a Kirby-related question (as that is my only "expertise"), please let me know! I have a fairly good grasp on vacuum theory and just a tiny bit of history too.

Your vacuums sound great!! I like the older style Eurekas. I have yet to get my hands on a canned ham but those power heads with the dead center headlight look really neat.

Do you have a Digital Camera by chance? You can easily upload photos to your computer with that.

If I ever see another canned ham, I will let you know, if it is decent shape and restoreable. One model 1289 was listed on E bay and the asking was $200. It did not have a powerhead, but one of those was also listed for $50, minus wands and sold as well. A set of wands are listed for $30.
One model 1279 was also sold, and the asking was also $200.
I have only the one power nozzle myself from my Moms 1279 Brandywine canister. Thanks to my sisters, that machine is not in as nice condition as the canned ham I got a couple weeks ago. Namely scratches, a dent, and the tool caddy. Some paint had been worn off the top of the headlight area from rubbing under furniture.
They are made of clear plastic, as light shined through in a few palces. I touched them up with a red and brown marker mixed to get the maroon shade. Close enough.
I do have access to a camera, my better half's. I may upload a photo or two soon.
I'm very old school. Not as old though as my original Pittsburgh (Plum burrough, Renton) roots.
 
I had a Wards canned ham from around 82? Gosh I think it was tan?? Had pushbuttons on top for something. That thing had POWER! Great powerhead too, if not the wards bags others seemed to tear apart. They were a bit wide I think for my place, wheels always got caught on the door, wish I had it still though :( Nice Blue and Green there Rob, gosh everyone used to have one of those in my circle of friends. Hard working machines.
 
Gary, that Empress II is a beauty for sure! Classic Vibrabeat!!!! original perfect condition with a better than new hose. long 11 inch floor brush. pet comb too.
How many amps does she draw? My 1290 is am 11.9 amp. Not sure how a model 1289 is different. They look identical to me. Maybe Canadian made vs. Bloomington?
David, what happened to the tan Wards canned ham you had?
Seems I recall seeing that one in my aunts laundry hall coat closet in Ann Arbor back then as well. She ran the credit dept. at the Ann Arbor Wards back in the late 1940's. or early 50's.
Those buttons move nylon reed's sideways and let air bleed off to reduce or increase suction. If it had 6 buttons, it had 5 nylon reeds, and three different size slits cut into the lid of the canister. I took mine apart and cleaned them. Quite ingenious really, yet simple. No elelctronics to burn out.
Was it also a two speed? That gave 12 suction levels.
I have three of my machines poised for a photo. Just have to charge the camera up and figure how to upload them. Soon.
 
Ok guy's, here are three of my Eurekas. The Express 8290 powerteam is worse for wear, so no pic. The hoover floormate is a year old, and does a great job. No streaks like a steam mop.
The 1279 without it's hose is it's best side, but the dent is rather small on the other side, but may have shown. The power nozzle is a model 1236 with a vibra-groomer I extruded twisted beater bar brush. The oxygen with the grey powerhead has a vibragroomer II dual row brush beater bar of chromed steel.

Yuck.
I wish my folks hadn't sold their Dual Sanitronic 50 at a flea market. It wasn't pitted or rusty. I wonder who has it?
I inherited the 1279 Eureka I bought for my mom back in 1979. My sisters beat it up some.
