My mother wants a new upright as her old Kenmore Quick Clean bagless started cracking apart. She is currently using her 15 year old Kenmore Whispertone canister, but wants a bagless upright because she always felt it cleaned the carpet better. Which I don't think is true, but anyway, it's what she wants. I think bagged is better, but she is set on a bagless because the bags are expensive and she doesn't want the smelly dog hair sitting in the bag and stinking next time she uses it.
I personally liked the Kenmore Progressive Direct Drive with Intelliclean and Gentlesweep that my friend has, but they are not selling anything like that anymore. I think something like the Kenmore Elite CrossoverUltra bagless would work well for my mom, but they are pricey and I question the durability. I don't want to pay that much for something I would be using my self let alone someone that might not be as gentle on it.
Other than that the red Progressive bagged is basically what she had but with a bag and no cord reel, but she doesn't want bagged. The white Intuition bagless seems nice, but the stores don't seem to have them. The new red Progressive bagless seems a bit bulky but I guess would be the second closest to what she had. Are the cheaper silver or black/green models good?
I'm not familiar with what other brands have. I know the Bissell Powerforces are a nice lightweight vacuum but I don't like and I know she would not like the messy filters they use.
So we're mainly looking for a bagless upright with a good filter system. IE, not with a filter in the collection bin or a paper filter. Her Kenmore had a nice pleated HEPA filter in a separated area that she vacuumed out with her canister vac and it held up pretty well, didn't seem to leak dust or get messy.
