I Figured Out Kirby From The Brave Little Toaster's Real Life Equivalent!

I found it! Kirby Is a Kirby Dual Sanitronic 80 with a Dual Sanitronic 50 handle!
Everything about Kirby's features match up witch a DS80. The rounded rear, the green bag, the triangular belt lifter and the headlight hood. Of course, his handle may have broken, and been replaced with a DS50 handle. (I know some vac shops do that.) But here's the real kicker. In the movie, the Master grew up and moved out of the house. The movie was made in 1987, and if it was set in the same year it was made (which is probable, considering the computer and touch tone phone shown later in the movie) that would be the perfect time frame. The Master is about 20 in the movie, and being 20 in 1987 would mean he wouldve been born in the late 60's. Right when the Kirby DS80 was still being produced. The Master said he's had the appliances since he was a little kid. (further driving home the point) Now all someone needs to do is mod a DS80 into the movie character.

What they have done is change "Kirby" to look more like todays modern machines. Kirby no longer looks like a Kirby vacuum.

let me give a little backround.

This story actually originated as a book. The novel was written by Thomas M. Disch, whom was a science fiction author. The story was originally intended to not be a kids book, or story because the initial idea of appliances, seemed absurd to his publisher. So in 1978, a short version was published in a science fiction magazine, after it gained interest, then it was published as a novel in 1980, then from there, it indecently appealed to the younger audience.


 


In the book, he was not Kirby, he was referenced as, either "the old Hoover", or just Hoover. On the cover he was made to look like a model 115 junior, that was produced in 1946. There is a passage in the first book, about the time period that this story takes place. The alarm clock (he was a clock radio, not just radio on the book), was part of a discussion about how long the appliances had been abandoned. The clock said the master left on Sep 26th 1973, and it is now March 8th 1976. So with that being said, it is still a summer cottage, but the Master was not a kid, he is a grown married man, and the reason for the cottage being deserted in the book, is because his wife suffers from hay fever.


 


Now in the second book, which is The Brave Little Toaster Goes To Mars. Its actually discussed exactly how old the Old Hoover is.  That book is sooo much different to the movie, that I wont go into hard details on here, you will just have to get a copy of it and read it....lol...But Hoover is, according to the book, from 1940. In the first book he is also mentioned as the oldest of the group.  There is also a great passage in the first book about meeting the new vacuum cleaner at the city apartment. Keep in mind, the time period is 1976.


 


I personally think anyone who sees the movie needs to read both books. They are VERY well written, and include things that should have been in the films. Not to mention they are full of meanings, and irony's too that makes one think.

The replacement in the book...

It's probably a Hoover Celebrity II. It's 1976, so a year after the Hoover Celebrity II started production. Secondly, they state that it looks like a hamburger bun on wheels, matching the Celebrity II's appearance. Lastly, they say the new machine has wheels, so it has to be a Celebrity II. The Celebrity I floated on it's own exhaust like a Hoover Constellation. (They made this change because the original Celebrity melted the ever-popular shag carpet) I wonder why they got rid of "The Old Hoover"?


In the movie, I think the replacement canister is an Aerus Electrolux Grand Marquise, judging by it's appearance. It could be anything though.

This thread convinced me to watch the movie, which I had only saw pieces of many years ago. Very silly - I enjoyed it. It made for a good time-out for a busy week.
Yes, Kirby would be close to a D80 just as described. What I just learned is that the master's name is Rob - how coincidental!

Sounds like the Vacuum in the story has changed several times over the years. I have seen pictures of the of the vacuum in the story that looked like a Kirby and also saw pictures from one of the current movies showing that Kirby had changed to a more modern looking vacuum so that kids would recognize that Kirby was a vacuum.

May have to find a copy of the original story and read the book. Wouldn't mind watch the movies in full either for the fun and pure entertainment.
