Hi as a newbie on this forum, though no stranger, as have a profile on the sister site for washing machines, I thought I would say Hi to all.

I am thinking long and hard about my Hoover 612. This machine has been in the family since new, being bought by my parents when electricity came to the village I used to live in. I have cared for it over the last few decades, keeping it running replacing bits every now and then, but never doing a restoration job. As the Vacuum is now in semi retirement (daily driver now a Kirby G5) I am wondering if it would be worth trying to do a restoration.

I would need a new plastic top cover, a new belt guard thingey and the correct paint for the handle and main body, also a source of the replacement bags. I can't get them here anymore, I bought the last ones in the shop some time ago. Oh, and new brushes as well.

Any one any thoughts?

Restore 612

Hi Philip

And welcome - I think we have met previously on AW.

The simple answer is yes, you should. These are wonderful old machines that (obviously) will go on for years and years and years. Personally I think the 612 is also the best sounding machine and of course you have a long family history with it.

Its just a shame that you are posting this today as as myself and some other collectors were actually down in Cornwall, sadly helping another collector liquidate his collection. There were quite a few spares and whilst I cannot answer for brushroll strips there was almost certainly a shake out bag or twelve which would have suited as long as you have the flange from the old one. By the way if the original bag is still reasonably intact it is possible to use a disposable bag inside if it is just for occasional use - this is a good idea anyway as dust left lying in the bag will rot it.

But for starters have a look on the link - its tailor made for you :)

HI Vacbear

Hi Vacbear, nice to meet you again, round the corner, so to speak.

I am sooooo envious of Anthony's 612 mine looks rather more like the 'before' though with even less paint on the handle!!

How do I, if I can, drop people a PM? Also just my luck as my house is always open and the kettle always on.

I do have a few spares of my own though few now as many years ago the dear old chap who serviced the vacuum retired & asked my if I would clear out his workshop.

I do have a couple of interesting other domestic appliances that I will need to find a good home for soon. I am hopefully selling up to go to live in Spain, well that's the plan.

I have a Hoover two brush floor polisher Burgundy in colour, a Vactric vacuum, a Ewbank Progress No3 Carpet sweeper that my Father had rebuilt just before the factory moved from Accrington (I think).

If anyone can tell me where I could get a belt from for the Vactric or give me a hint as to one that would fit I would be eternally grateful. That is assuming that anyone has even heard of Vactric!!

Assuming that anyone has even heard of Vactric

Silly boy, of course we, or at least I, have heard of Vactric! I presume that you have the Junior model with the bag on the front? It uses a flat belt and i have used, I think, a Panasonic belt - no chance of getting a vactric after nearly 63 years out of business.

As far as I can see you are not an upgraded (paying) member slo the only means of sending a private message is to use the email address displayed in the profile, assuming the member has not supressed its display
