Hose Lengths on Miele Olympus S2120 and Electrolux UltraSilencer Green

I am contemplating a new suction only canister purchase here in Canada.

Using Consumer Reports' latest tests of canisters, I am looking at one of two options: The red Miele Contour S2120 (which is the white Olympus in the USA) or the black Electrolux UltraSilencer Green. Not happy with the tool storage on either one, but at least the Miele has somewhere to store the crevice tool! On the other hand, the UltraSilencer is quieter. One thing for sure, I know the UltraSilencer Green has a longer cord than the Olympus - 21 feet versus 18 feet! They are both listed as costing USD300.

I am trying to find out which one has the longer hose. I think the Electrolux has a 7 foot hose, whereas the Olympus only gives you a 5 foot hose. Is this correct? Does anyone know for sure the length of hose for each of these vacs?

Also, will the Miele Contour/Olympus S2120 take one of those nifty Miele Flexhose extenders? I think that it is Model Number SFS10. It's got a hidden hose that can extend your reach. But all websites say that it is for the S4 and S5 series. Just wondering if the S2120 will take it too.

Any help and information provided would be greatly appreciated!

If you were to go with a Miele...

As someone who practically lives and breaths everything Miele, I would highly recommend going with the S4 Contour over the S2 Contour. The S4 Contour with the better SBD450-3 combination rug/floor tool can be had at $399 CDN, which as far as I am concerned is a steal.

While the FJM bag on the S4 is smaller (it's a similar size to the S-Bag used in the Electrolux), this machine has had fewer issues that I have seen versus the S2 series. In my opinion, other than the smaller bag size, the S4 offers nothing but benefits when compared to the straight-air Miele S2.

The motor used in the S2 has the same wattage (1200W) as the motor that is shared between the S4, S5 and S7 series. However, due to its big-box store price point, the S2 motor has had corners cut in its construction and is also slightly smaller in size. Miele has also recently revised the advertised life span of the S2 series from its usual 1000 hours down to 750 hours. Additionally, the ABS plastic used in its construction is thinner and it is not a sealed system like S4, S5 and S7.

The S2 is a good machine when compared to all big-box store machines. But if you are looking at the straight-air, the S4 is the better deal.

To answer your questions, the S2 has a 6' hose (in comparison, the S4 has a 7' hose). And yes, both the straight-air S2 and S4 will accept the SFS10 Flexhose.

Thanks Scott!!!! That is a great help....it was important for me to know how short the S2 hose is, but that you can extend it with the Flexhose. How much is that hose extender? Have there been any problems connecting and using this hose extender?

I prefer having a regular curved hose handle, not one with the extra comfort grip. Does the S4 have a regular hose handle like the S2?

The SFS10 retails for $39.99 CDN. I have never seen nor myself encountered any problems attaching or removing the flexhose from either the curved or comfort grip handle.

The S4 Contour comes with the curved handle. The S4 Momentum comes with the comfort grip handle.

One last question Scott - sorry for being such a "nudnik"....

It would be great if Miele had some kind of attachment carrier or holder that I could use to collect any additional tools I might purchase later. The Vario-Clip seems to ruin the look of the canister, in my opinion.

At one point a few weeks ago, Sears was selling Miele special packages and I recall seeing some kind of black bag with pouches for tools and even wands. Was I seeing things? Did it have the Miele name on it? Does Miele indeed offer some kind of separate tool carrier that I could buy? Or was this some Sears special that I could only get from them?

I am not aware of any other attachment carrier that is supplied by Miele. However, they do have a reusable Miele shopping bag that would work very well for storing any attachments. They are currently only available with the FJM and GN value packs.
