Hoovers 65 and 66

Based on the model 305 date range thread and the Hoover service manual page that was posted on the model date and serial numbers, I decided to look at the serial number from my Grandmother's model 65 Convertible. It was A 2206416. According to the chart, the starting serial # was A1800001 in 1957. That would seem like they produced a very high number of these. Yet the Model 66 shows as starting only one year later in 1958.

Did they produce these models simultaneously? I always assumed they replaced one model with the next within the same line.

You know, (maybe), that the 65 was the first "Convertible", setting the pace of cleaners for HOOVER. 65, 66, 67, 68 all had the handle matching the hood, etc. It was the 69 that made a white handle first. The 68 was the one featured in the Jerrry Lewis movie, "Who's Minding the Store?"

Wow. So unless there was more than one sequence of serial #s, that means that my grandmother's model 65 was #406415 and I'm sure her's was not the last one produced. I never realized that they produced so many of that one model, but I guess that explains why the 65 seems so much more common to stumble across than the 66-68 models. I don't believe I have ever seen a 67 other than in photos on this site.

My Grandmother told me on more than one occasion that she bought her 65 (along with an 86 Constellation) in 1960. And knowing the 65 was introduced in 1957 I just assumed that her memory of this over years lost track of a year or two. But if over 400,000 models were produced before her's I guess it very like could have been 1960.

Here is model 65 #2206416. Always wanted to clean her up, but because this one is a family "heirloom" I am much more hesitant to take it apart for fear that it wouldn't go back together. You have to know my luck. If only these early models didn't warp. You don't see this on the 62-64, 29.

it was TOTALLY possible to buy a HOOVER made in '57,&#39

1960. Our 67 was bought in 1961. Some models were made a for possibly 3 years or so. You'll see various slight changs during the run, too. For example, the BLUE 70 was the cleaner that went from large HOOVER badge to small. The 1076went from "diving board' (bag clip) to the return of the spring. It deprnded, also, on the stock, location, and special sales.

Badge to Decal

I still vividly remember being 5 years old and my initial view of the brand new 1070 that my mother brought home. My eyes were immediately drawn to the tiny decal and I was appalled. I noticed that even before I noticed the new style headlight. I was even more disappointed in about 3 years when the decal started to peel off. I had that thing taped on and later glued on to make sure it was not going anywhere.

Hoover 65

Hi John I got my 65 April 19 1959 I sure wish i had it now.My mom gave it to her sister after we got the Kirby God only knows where it is. i would sure love to get another one. Here on Long Island old vacuums are almost unheard of. take care Doug

Yes Doug, I couldn't agree more. I've had to rely heavily on eBay for vintage vacs of late. Once is awhile, I may still find a Convertible thrown out, but more often than not they are in deplorable condition. As for when various Hoover models were sold, you could still buy a new Hoover Dial-A-Matic as late as 1980, even though the Concept had already been out for two years.
