Hoover Windtunnel Self Propelled

What do you think of the Hoover Windtunnel Self Propelled? I like the looks of it and the color. Plus I like how it's a big heavy, clean air upright, like the Panasonics were. There's a recent one at a local thrift store, but it has no price and missing attachments.

The only things I don't like about these is the noise and the hoses can be difficult to use. With an extension hose it would probably do pretty well.

The suction is very good on these, and I've heard them called the updated equivalent of the Dial-A-Matic. They are a bit clunky and awkward to use, and the power drive is as "herky jerky" as is the DAM, but I myself prefer the Dial-A-Matic since it incorporates more metal into the construction. Hard to believe that it's already been 20 years since the first Windtunnels rolled off the assembly line.

It's a boat anchor of a vacuum, but they have great agitation and powerful suction. They are loud because they have such a big motor in there. When I first used mine straight from the thrift store with no maintenance, it could clean so much trampled and embedded dog hair and grit from an outdoor doormat that had been there for months that it looked brand new again after about 10 mins of vacuuming back and forth and loosening it all up layer by layer. You couldn't even tell it was the same rug. Keep in mind with extension hoses that for every foot of hose, you lose airflow.

They do the job and clean well, but not a fan of them

I don't mind them a whole lot. With all the trash that has nearly consumed the industry from companies such as Bissell, Hoover, and Eureka, the original WindTunnel models seem very nice in comparison. They clean carpet quite thoroughly, they have a good balance of suction and airflow, they were affordable, and so forth. I know that many regular vacuum cleaner users have disliked the weight and size of them, though. As far as clean-air units go, I have always preferred the Kenmore DirectDrive models that Panasonic made. They are comparable enough in features, weight, and bulkiness, yet the DirectDrive units seem to clean carpet better.
