Hoover vintage for modern - better or worse?

Hey there forum! I'm new here, so forgive my weird or awkwardness in asking this question. So I'm condisering purchasing either a hoover Gaurdsman c1431 or c1631, or professional series CH50000 or CH50050. Sadly, hoover no longer carries these models (with the exception of the guardsman being sold as the bagless convertible style c1433, which i don't like, but that sort of guardsman machineonly being available is better than the guardsman being discontinued altogether!). I'm interested in that sort of machine as I'm currently an independet janitor cleaning for an office. I use a Hoover U4395 my grandma gave me for everyday cleaning with a Kirby Sentria beast being kept around for the bigger jobs given its weight and size (used to be used daily, but that's another story). I love the hoover's beater brush as it helps get the sand out of the carpet, but the guardsman only has a dual row brush, no beater, and the pro series only has a quad row brush. Hoover no longer makes the old style beater brush, and I can nly find one on ebay. I know sanitaire has uprights that use beater brushes known as the vibragroomer, something I have learned that's been around for a while, but it uses differnt endcaps as the hoover. Would I be able to use the endcaps for a hoover convertible as well as the inside shaft? Would it make the machine clean better? what about a beater brush from my convertible? Would it help the convertible style vacuum clean better or worse? or would there not be any noticeable difference?

Have you considered a Royal metal upright similar to this one. It cleans as good or better than a Kirby but is lighter because there is no transmission. The brushroll has brush stiffeners which act just like the Hoover beater bars did. This machine uses disposable bags but can be purchased with the shakeout bag system as well.

I have Considered the Royal metal upright, it's a REALLY nice machine. I'm torn between a Hoover and a royal as my top choice. I like the hoover because it's similar to the Convertible, which is what I own. it's lightweight, has a nice carry handle, and lays flat. Two things I don't like is that the machine has since been discontinued by hoover (might mean it's harder to get a warranty for it) and that the machine does not have cord hooks on the side like the convertible. I like the royal since it has the similar if not exactly the same design as kirby (a design that dates WAY back. It goes back to the 20's, maybe the 1910s, but that's another story), it's metal, has a wider cleaning path (albeit only 2 inches, but as i often say: who has time for statistics?), and has the adjust-o-rite on some models. two things i don't like about it are that it might not lay as flat as the hoover and that the currently made models with the adjust-o-rite have a knob adjustment, which is something i'm not familiar with and might be a little difficult to adjust the height. I have broadened my horizon however to other machines if neither seem to fit the bill in the end. It's a bummer that they're made in china. Their power seems to still be powerful regardless of the country of manufacture. Sometimes I blame the fact that I'm a huge sucker for looks (and occasionally familiarity) for my indecisiveness.

Just to let you know that Royal metal uprights are now being assembled by TTI in the USA again. They are now being assembled at the old Oreck plant in Louisiana. The quality of the Royal metal upright has not suffered at all. The machines are still manufactured with the same excellent quality that Royal has always been known for.


 


Proper height adjustment is easy to obtain. Just twist the Adjust-O-Rite knob until the plastic button on the front of the nozzle sucks in and you have obtained the perfect height for the type of carpet you are vacuuming.


 


As far as lying flat, I can assure you that there is a release lever located at the base of the handle that will allow the machine's handle to lie completely flat to the floor.

They're made in the USA AGAIN?!?! HALLELUJAH! err.. ahem... I mean dreams have come true! This is wonderful! I never heard the news that they moved it back to the USA, then again I've not been looking for a new machine in the past few years! I wonder what Royal may bring us now that they're back in the USA. They only have 1 machine listed for household, but maybe in the future that will change (hoover may even come back with some old favorites too)! I guess now that's a now a null and void point in the royal vs kirby debate: one is made in china (now both are US made). well with this move, hopefully other companies will follow to: make vacuuming great agai- oh wait that meme died last year. Well, Royal definitely is one of my top choices for an office vac considering that it is built to last and cleans well! Hoover is still winning me over with their commercial convertible-style models. Maybe if I owned an old royal instead of an old hoover, I might be won over more easily. Hmmm.... Perhaps I should take a look at each machine's individual performance on a commercial carpet. For the hoover models, that might mean trying it with a dual row brush, a quad brush, and then a beater bar and seeing what would work best. Maybe I'm trying to think too much on a brush type and agitation style and or efficiency rather than overall cleaning.

you may want to consider Royal's Commercial line of metal upright vacuums instead of the household model. The commercial Royal is available with standard 14" nozzle or 18" nozzle for large open areas of carpet. Check out this video:

Hoover Conquest

What about the Hoover Conquest?

This features the activator - similar to what was fitted to our Hoover Turbopowers and Turbomasters. The carpet pile gets 'reactivated'.

The beater bars on this version are the raised nodules on the barrel. Twin rows of bristles too.

I'll never forget the day in 2013 I stupidly left a Royal to rot at Goodwill and not buy it. It had a magnet attachment on the front too, to pick up paperclips and other metal things, it must have been from a elementary school (it had that pencil shavings smell we all remember wafting off it).

I absolutely love my Royal 8300. It is very powerful and maneuverable and it deep cleans my carpet better than my Kirby Sentria. I will never sell or trade this machine.

I am actually considering royal's commercial line. The way that there's no cap on the end of the wheels (like some household models do. While they do kinda look nice, the royal logo just kills it for me. Other brands can do it well with colored end caps though.) looks cool. I'm kind of a sucker (no pun intended, really) so it has me sold in part. Rolls_Rapide, the Hoover conquest is a really nice machine too. I personally have no experience, but with how it's been around for quite some time proves that it is a good model. Sadly it too has been discontinued as all I find on Hoover commercial's website sadly are bagless models. I've been in luck to find one store online that has the c1800-020 available my only concern is, the store hasn't updated the website and no longer has it. The guardsman c1431 however is available in other stores despite it too being discontinued by Hoover. It's still in consideration nonetheless (even have it as a saved eBay search!). Side note: I may have found a site that may even have the c1439 preferred commercial (guardsman) vacuum in stock (long story short, found the base for the guardsman for sale on eBay, and looked at the models it fit and saw c1439 and discovered the machine for sale from a google image search!).

The machine looks nice. but, like I said, the royal logo on the hub caps just kill it for me. back on the main subject of vintage for a modern hoover vacuum and or vice versa, would anybody reccomend try a beater brush in a gaurdsman if i do buy one? I've finally figured out that a VG/VGII beater brush won't work in a convertible/ guardsman as A) I can't swap end caps and the inner shaft and B) even if I were to swap end caps and the inner shaft for the brush, it still wouldn't work as the belt path is NOT centered. I am also curious to know if it might be possible to stick a convertible motor inside a sanitaire given that it can be wired properly.

Royal 97001 problem with replacement brushroll

I bought a replacement Royal OEM brushroll from eBay vendor. All wood $30 delivered.
I contacted him in advance to be certain that his OEM brushroll was the right one for my 97001. He assured me it was. It is not as it hits on the inside of green light mechanism. Because it seems nearly impossible with much looking to find a new brushroll decided to modify the new one to make it work. It only required cutting off two brushes from one end so it does not hit. Very easy with coping saw and side cutters.

I still don't have functionality of the green light but can probably harvest the magnetic part off old brushroll. Has anyone done this before. These old vacuums are so much better that the junk sold now. We also have a Meile, that works fine on bare floors and is sealed perfectly but its cheap plastic and useless on carpet...
