Hoover U1104 Agitator bearings

Hey guys,

Sorry to ask what may seem like a daft question, but I'm a complete novice when it comes to certain repairs (mainly because I've never had to do it lol).

I've recently picked up a U1104 in fantastic condition. However, in use, the brushroll seems to slow down on the carpet, even with a replacement belt. I understand that this may be to do with worn bearings. I have ordered a new activator brushroll, but I don't think it comes with either the bearings or the metal end caps. I've got the metal end caps off the brushroll, but have no idea where to go from here. Can anyone help with how to go about replacing these?

Once you have the end caps off the bearings should just pop out (tap the bearing from the back with the end of the axle or a long screwdriver), the bearings can be somewhat refurbished, I did that with mine, but they never work too well if they've been dry or worn for too long, so it's better to just replace them. They always sound rough though, even when new, that's just the nature of those types of bearing...

Thanks for the help. We've got the the end caps off but nothing has come off with them. Some pics below.

Can anybody advise where we go from here? Nothing came off when we removed the end caps

Tap one end of the axle with something like the handle of a screwdriver (so you don't damage the thread), one end, with one bearing, will pop out, remove that bearing, then carefully push the axle back through and try to "catch" it on the end of the axle, then when you have it, just tap the end again to pop that one out too, that should get the bearings out...

Interestingly, my U1104 came with one of those brushrolls, and it was so worn that the bristles were just stubs in the plastic, I replaced the brushroll with the older style metal one with replaceable strips, acquired from the vac shop where I got my bearings and suchlike from...

Thanks for the help. Tried what you said but neither the axle or the thread will budge. I don't suppose you know where I cam buy a complete new agitator assembly?

Soak the ends in WD40 the put one of the caps back on loosely. Then hit the cap with a hammer. The other end should fly out.
