Hoover that first introduced the the beater bar brushroll

I am confused did Hoover change beater bar brushroll to agitator brushroll along the line?.....Is the model 700 the first vacuum with the beaterbar brushroll? Are beater bar brushroll and agitator brushroll the same?.....

Hoover introduced a bar that gently tapped the carpet on the model 700 in 1926. This greatly increased the effectiveness of their cleaners. The 543 of 1926 also had this technology. To me an agitator implies a beater bar. However, there are lots of cleaners out there with agitators that use brushes only. Pre-1926 Hoover cleaners used brushes only. Today they are all molded from one piece of plastic, but a Windtunnel (etc.) all seem to beat the rug to loosen the deep down grit without the use of metal bars. Hoover changed the look of their agitator over the years to improve its function and lower its cost.

Tom, thanks for the information about the bar Hoover introduced on 700 and 543 and improvements made over the years.
I believe many of us had misconceptions about this.

I think part of the reason for the abandonment of beater bars by many companies today is largely due to the fact that the suction of modern machines is sufficient to get out deep-down grit without the aid of vibration - or at least, without any more than can be provided by a stiff set of bristles.

in addition, for a beater bar to work best, the machine being used must be able to LIFT the rug toward the nozzle, and many wall to wall type carpets today are too heavy to be lifted by the machines suction. beater bars can scuff bare floors. also, an additional set of bristles gives the instant grooming that soo many people expect today. people expect to clean the filthiest rugs with one pass of the cleaner nowadays. also, a beater-bar is best made of metal, and as we know the trend is toward plastic.

one of my life's missions is to get people to stop calling a brushroll or agitator a "beater bar". a beater bar is PART of a (usually) Hoover agitator. of course, "agitator" is/was what The Hoover Co. called their brushroll. rant over.
