Hoover Spirit

Here is one of my favorite Hoovers. I love the Brown and tan color. It always reminds me of the old 28 Hoover color. This was to me one of the last "real" Hoovers. It still has beater bars and SOFT Hoover brushes on the power nozzle.
It was given to me as a Christmas gift. It came from a "real" Hoover dealer and not a big box store. It has many deluxe features such as cord winder,full bag indicator,deluxe tools with floor brush,deluxe power nozzle with off/on control and wide light. It has chrome wands. It is very easy to use and can be used standing on end for the stairs. The tools are stored under the lid. The power nozzle really makes the rugs look nice and the grit dance on top of the carpet. On the down side the hose is short and of course is leaks dust and smells like a Hoover so it gets only used in basement vacuumland.

I have one Spirit with a tool caddy and a power head, and two plainer Spirits, I love those vacuums! One has a little issue with the cover popping off though.

Your Spirit is beautiful, I really like the two tone brown. Looks like a grerat power nozzle too. I also really lik all of your wood furniture, it reminds me of grandma's livingroom, diningroom, and bedroom furniture from Tell City in the Andover maple finish.

Hoover Spirit

I have never seen one with the tool caddy on top. They really made quite a few models of the Spirit. Of course it's not as much fun as the Constellation.

You have a GOOD EYE. I have living room,dining room and bedroom furniture from Tell City. It's all old and out of style and will never wear out!
Here is a picture of the attachments. It even came with the floor brush. It is fairly quiet compared to the uprights of today. At $239.95 it wasn't a cheap cleaner when it was bought for Christmas in 1995.

Until you posted your Spirit I had never seen one with the concealed attachments. They were a few around here but nowhere near as popular as the Hoover uprights and Kenmore canisters at the time but all the Spirits in this area were the lower end ones with the tool caddy on top and most were without a powernozzle.
as for your Tell City furniture it has to be my favorite, I do tend to lean towards early american styled furniture in maple, and to me it is still stylish beacuse it is a timeless look. I have Mersman maple furniture for the livingroom and diningroom and a maple waterfall bedroom suite, not sure who manufactured it.It is such a shame that they are no longer in business.

Hoover Spirit

You are correct about the Spirit. Around central Indiana you saw millions of the cheap Hoover Convertibles and low end version of the Hoover Spirit. They made them in such cheap looking colors that it turned me off on the machine.
It seemed like if you had an upright it was a Hoover and if you preferred a tank cleaner it was always an Electrolux or Air-Way. My relative who is over 80 did not even realize that Hoover EVER made anything but an upright.
I remember seeing ads for the Mersman Company years ago. I know you are supposed to have antique furniture,oriental rugs and valuable nick-nacks. I do have more formal mahogany furniture in the living room,dining room and one bedroom but kept the old Tell City for my great room,breakfast room and 2 bedrooms. It just seems more like a real home and at my age I am not interestered in impressing anyone. I am your grandmother's age!!!
Have you ever seen one of the hardback books that Tell City put out showing all the different furniture they used to make? They produced lamps and accessories too. They used to give you one when you bought a piece. I think Ethan Ellen did the same thing years ago.
It would be interesting to know when they came out with the Spirit and when they stopped production. Mine was from old stock so although I got it in 1995 the date on the machine shows 1989.

Yes I did know about tell city's accessoeies and lamps, grandma has a pair of table lamps and an adjustable height floor lamp, and as for the accessories she has the wooden paddle, shovel and fork and spoon, and a pair of sconces that hangs on the wall. They have the hard covered book, my grandparents had a store in the lat 50's-late 70's and they sold GE and Hotpoint appliances, RCA tv's, Hoover and Eureka vacuums, and they sold Tell City and Century furniture. Grandma may still have some of the sale books from Tell City.
Also are you sure that you are the agre of my grandparents, they are in their mid 70's I didn't think you were of that age.
As for the replacement for the sprint canister there was a canister very similar to the Windtunnel canisters that they made in the early to mid 90's before affixing the Windtunnel name to it. Don't remember what it was called but do remember seeing them at the K-Mart and I believe they were burgandy in color, and there were also the Runabout canisters for K-Mart too in the same style and they had a model with and one without a powernozzle.

Thnaks for the information. I really didn't know much about the later Hoover canisters. I didn't know Tell City was sold outside Indiana. I thought it was just a local company from southern Indiana.
I am not quite as old as your grandparents. I was aware when I got my Tell City that is was out of style but I always buy what I like and I still enjoy it. I bet we could have a very interesting conversation! You always learn something new on this forum. Thanks again Sam.
