Hoover Platinum Collection bagged upright # UH30010

Came across one of these at goodwill this past weekend. I saw it on Saturday and passed it up since the plastic casing was scratched up a bit and the cord was frayed in a couple places. Anyways, I went back Sunday and it was still there. A small kid was playing around with a small bagless model next to it, carrying it all over the store, and I grabbed up the Hoover before he could get his hands on that one.

The further I inspected it, it appears that the repairs needed to the cord would be minor. I plugged it in and it worked well. Brushroll didn't appear to be very worn and it had a brand new Hoover brand HEPA bag installed. The concept of this Hoover appears very similar to that of the Oreck..a lightweight machine with a very long cord (35 ft). Once nice thing with the Hoover that the Oreck uprights do not have is a check-bag indicator on the handle and it is much more quiet than the Oreck XL models, similar in sound to the Platinum Pilot Oreck I have. It is two speed as well. It is a few lbs heavier though...12 lbs vs 8.

When I got it home, I cleaned it up a bit and removed some shredded paper and dog hair that was wedged in near the front of the brushroll. After this, I ran it in the den and it seems to be a nice machine. The LED headlights are a nice touch and it grooms the carpet just the the Orecks so overall, I'm happy with it.

has anyone else used this model? I believe it originally came with a small portable canister vac for above floor cleaning.

They did, I think after a while though it could be bought separately. I know it gets good reviews, but some, maybe early ones? had circuit board issues, I THINK. Never owned, wanted

I have 2 of them.

I like them... not the 1st thing I'd save in a fire, but..............
I like the LARGE bag, LONG cord, BRIGHT light, ....
I dislike the handle release on the RIGHT (not left) side.. don't need a power light to be on. I KNOW it's plugged in.
Overall, a surprisingly nice machine. The little "Portapower wannabe" is ok. The hose is nice, the sound is shrill, the tools look like toys.

I didn't really care for it. I compared it to 3 other lightweights and my method of testing was rather unscientific but I I just never felt like it cleaned as well as my Freedom or XL-21 I'm not sure which was better between the XL ultra and the Hoover though. I think the Hoover has higher flow vs the ultra but the full bushy brush of the Ultra did provide better grooming but cleaning wise i'm unsure.

I've seen about 4 of them with failed boards, the one I had did also have this issue. I just decided to throw a push button switch on it, of course i lost the speed control and lights in doing this, but *shrugs* at least it ran

I love mine! One of the few uprights to rate an “excellent” in deep carpet cleaning in current Consumer Reports rankings (along with the Kirby Avalir, the Maytag 1200 and the Miele Cat & Dog Dynamic upright.)

Lightweight, 35 foot cord, two speeds and very large dust bag with excellent filtration. An amazing carpet cleaner for under $400. It’s like a throwback to the powerful Eureka Bravos of the 1990’s, but only uses a 5amp motor.

I’ve had mine for 5 years and has not needed any repairs in that whole time. Highly recommended by me!

Hi Jason,

I have indeed owned two of these vacuums. I gave the first set (Upright and Canister) to my Uncle when he moved into a new condo with all carpeting. But afterward I felt I missed it too much, so I bought a new one last year.

I love this vacuum and agree with you on all points, bag check is great, quiet and great carpet grooming. I shared some pics of my newest one, as I didn’t have pics of all my vacuums back when I gave my Uncle the first Hoover Platinum Lightweight Bagged Upright. I also, for fun, placed my Hoover LiNX Cordless vacuum in the picture as I used to own the Platinum Cordless too, but after giving it away to a friend, I bought the sleek black Linx edition instead... Love the Gloss Piano Black Color and the Dirt Cup is also tinted dark which makes it look so elegant.

Unfortunately, if you want to replace the cord on the Hoover Platinum Upright vacuum, you have to replace both the Handle and Cord, just like with the Miele Upright vacuums. I found one at parts warehouse, but it’s $72 bucks and on eBay it was even higher priced. Hopefully the cord is not too damaged and you can use it safely.

Thanks for sharing and GREAT bargain, deal even without getting the portable canister with it. I like the Portable canister, but I do find it very loud and I didn’t like the dusting brush at all, so I replaced it with a nature hair bristle brush (see pic 5) and it works much better for me. Love the HEPA filtration, but just wish Hoover would have added more sound insulation to this canister. My hope is eventually Hoover will make a Brushless Portable Canister vacuum that will be so much quieter.

Thanks for the comments. Your UH300 looks to be in much better condition than mine, but for the $17 and some change that I spent on mine, I can't complain too much about its condition. Regarding the cord, most of the issue is where the cord enters the handle at the top of the machine. It looks as though someone pulled it too hard and tore the plastic sheathing (wires are in tact and not torn). I had some JB weld cold epoxy and used that to repair it, which seems to be good so far. I also used it on another cut area on the cord where someone appeared to have run over it a couple times with the vacuum. JB weld works great for a lot of different things.

I was curious about the companion canister, but figured it was probably just as loud as the Oreck Buster B or similar variant. They never had very good tools, but worked well enough. The LiNX looks to be a nice machine and I like the color as well.

I'm with the others

I really like these. I wish the entire Platinum Collection is still being made, along with the 100th anniversary models as well since those were one of the last Hoovers that I really liked (Besides the commercial models).

You can get a lot of these Windtunnel bagged Hoovers by looking at TTI’s Royal division. There is even an identical lightweight bagged upright. I never liked the companion PortaPower canister that is packaged with the Hoover Platinum, so if you want to get the upright alone, may as well get the Royal version....see link below:

Can anyone tell me more about the UltraBelt Belt Saver? Does that have to do with the soft start on the motor? Was thinking that perhaps it helped prolong the life of the belt on the brushroll.

I'm aware with the Royal Windtunnels, the store I even work for sells those Windtunnels as well. I'm particularity talking about the ones that Hoover no longer sells because I prefer the brand and the colors better than the Royal versions. And the ones that have ceased production like the Self Propelled bagless for example.
