Hoover platinum carpet cleaner issues

Well as much as I love my baby, the platinum carpet washer, I am having some serious issues with it recently.


I went to use it to clean the carpets in my truck, and noticed the entire handle wont stand up. I looked at the bottom and noticed the entire panel was falling off.


The screws have busted through the plastic from the sheer weight of the cleaner, and flimsy thin plastic.


My mom gorilla taped it to hold it together, and when I used it, I tipped the cleaner down to take the dirty solution tank out.



I noticed that the whole area down there was cracking apart....


MY BABY!!!! :O NO!


I think its time to go rug doctor Mighty pro.

For carpet cleaning...

Try the Host system. I will neevr go back to wet cleaning unless it is bucket size spill.

Good luck with your new purchase.... that is terrible that your platinum broke considering the price of one new. It's not still under warranty is it? I've heard they are problematic. I like all the controls and the features they have, especially the two kinds of brushes. I know how upset I was when my regular (traditional style) Hoover Steam Vac broke (the hose stopped spraying), but a friend found an identical replacement on C/L for only 10 dollars and it's in better shape than mine.... it must have never been used and even came with the hose and hand tool which is rare for one of those when you find them used.

Crazy isn't it?

I mean, wouldn't you think that Hoover would at least use some sturdier plastic on their "Platinum" (cough) top of the line cleaner? It's a great product, but it's so cheaply made. It's seems like their standard cleaner is better made. Probably they sacrificed quality for features....Yet they give it a six year warranty. Strange.

I've heard the Royal carpet extractor is great and has very few issues and is the best home carpet cleaner you can get for under 300 dollars...

Up from that would be the Rug Doctor of course.

I have had a Sears Cleanmore for at least 25 years.  It isn't in the same class as a good Rug Doctor but it has been used HARD at times and has never let me down.

Platinum Experience

I had the Platinum Carpet Cleaner myself, and the first one I got the tank indicator lights did not work properly, so I exchanged it. Second one the brush belt would start slipping on normal carpet, and the brush motor would stall out. Exchanged it again (This time the lady at Target found it hard to believe that I was on my 3rd one which really pissed me off). This one was even worse than # 2 regarding the brush slipping and stalling out, so I bought a new one from a different store, and returned this old one in the box.

4th one LOL.... worked ok for about 6 months, then the brush motor started to stall out all the time. I tried to rig it so that the belt was tighter by cutting out some of the brushroll housing and screwing the brushroll down tight while pulling it away from the motor - belt was nice and tight then. That didn't last long though... it started slipping again. The last straw was when I called TTI and they told me I had to pay to ship it to them for repair.

I took the machine to the garage, and without any tools, made it fit inside the garbage bin. Then I went online and ordered a Rug Doctor - never looked back since.

I would not recommend these to anyone as they are not durable. It was a decent cleaner though.

Thanks for that, Andrew.  Now I don't have any regrets about passing up the virtually brand new one I saw last week at the thrift store.

I want a rug doctor or a big green. Just waiting for my Agility to die. It's actually pretty decent build quality considering it was less than 200 dollars.

Classic SpinScrub or Dual V All Terrain

They're the better choices of Hoover carpet cleaners. I have a 1999 Classic SpinScrub & still runs like a champ w/o problems (other than it needs a new hose) I'm not too sure about the MAX Extract Pressure Pro since I've never used one yet; but the other SpinScrub mdls are better than Rug Doctor or xxx. Maybe I'll buy a Dual V All Terrain soon (so I can alternate the Classic & Dual V every other time I shampoo carpets)

Why do U want to get rid of it? Is it not working good? The YT link didn't work when I click the link above. I heard the Agility isn't that bad.

That's Great! I'm sure you'll love it.......That is a good price. It's funny though that that site has a terrific price on the Rug Doctor, but the Royal Procision carpet cleaner is 400 dollars!!!!!That's 100 dollars more than most sites I've seen it on.

MAX Extract Pressure Pro

Don't buy it! I recently had some Pressure Pro units with stripped gears (inside turbine that spins the brushes) & cracked tanks come into my shop; so I now sell the Dual V All Terrain or Classic SpinScrub. Thank God I didn't buy the Max Extract!

The domestic models of carpet cleaners are not designed for "Heavy" use they are made of the same materials light weight materials use to make 8 lb vacuums. If it is to heavy. The average house wife doesn't want to deal with it. You are better off with the rug doctor for an extractor. over the domestic machines sold at every big box store. As far a water recovery the domestic models don't produce the lift of a commercial grade machines and there for leave behind more water. Weighting down a machine doesn't really so much to aid in water extraction on domestic machines. Just puts more wear on a machine that wasn't designed to carry that weight. Domestic machines also don't do any more than clean the top 8th inch of the surface of the carpet. there isn't enough water jet pressure or vaccum to recover the solution. The Host and Capture systems are great for regular maintenance for high traffic areas. But does not replace a good "Deep" cleaning of professional grade hot water machines. The carpet and rug institute still advocates the hot water extraction of carpets every 12 to 24 months depending on traffic. And low moisture methods for routine and interm maintenance. To frequent use of water cleaning methods can cause carpet delamination and mildew issues and discoloration due to wicking. When using water extraction methods AWAYS AWAYS make several passes over the just cleaned area with just the vacuum on and not applying addional water/solutin to that area.

I agree but adding the weight to my machine helped tremendously, even if I over soaked an area. IF I used the machine before I got the idea to add weight, it took a DAY for the carpets to dry. With the weight, three to four hours.

You didn't mention the aquamate 3 though, since it has the full rainbow suction as opposed to standard deep cleaners, I would suspect it would perform better than regular deep cleaners, though not as well as a Rug Doctor.
