Hoover Model 475 with 'new' bag!

Well, here is my model 475 with a bag that looks original but isnt. It's actually a standard black and white replacement bag which I have altered.

The Model 475 original bag is very similar except that the lines go right down to the bottom of the bag and 'EMPTY EACH TIME USED' is written under the lines. I got the idea some months ago from a thread on which Jack had put a photo of his original 475 bag.

This bag was not in the best of condition. It was greying but that meant that I could apply the black band round 'The Hoover' using black felt tip. The reddy orange I did using yellow, orange and red highlighters.

Now if only you could do the same thing with the 1934 models 450 and 800!

I am really pleased with how this bag turned out. Its the only model that has this unusual orangy red colour. Almost like Hoover was fed up with orange and wanted to try red but couldnt quite make the jump! (Model 825 was red though)

Hi Walter, Id forgotten Id put the 700 on the VCCC forum.
I agree about the flex. I dont know how long it was produced before being replaced by the double stretch hose.
Anyone know out there?

Nice example Jonathan!

This one looks pretty much flawless. I'm a little intrigued by the handle bail, which almost looks as if it's been recently chrome plated. The examples I've seen of this model (currently have about four) have steel bails painted black..and they can go rusty, whereas other machines, like the 575 and 700 appear to have aluminium ones, which will buff out.

I have a 638 tool kit with one of those cardboard caddies, though don't have the box to the right. However I can't remember which hose it has; I'll have to check.

with that lovely 1926 type bag and pistol grip handle.....is it UK or USA voltage ?

I think the braided 'compoflex' 638 hose would have been fitted to an early production run cleaner i.e. 1955/6, I think that sounds logical ?

chrome bail

Hi Stephen - yes I had the bail rechromed - the original was chromed but like most original chrome it had been badly damaged and rust had got through. The only black painted pre war bails Ive seen were one on a model 425 and on an 875. The 875 was painted black originally but I dont think the 425 was.

Walter, I think you're right that the Compoflex hose may only have been made in 1955/56. 638 production started in July 1955 as soon as 612 production stopped. Somebody somewhere will have an instruction book from an early 638 showing the compoflex hose in the cleaning tools picture.

By the way, the instruction booklet that came with my parent's 638 bought in 1959 states that the cleaner is 'the latest in vacuum cleaner design'. This is nearly 20 years after the Model 61 came out in the US!

The 612 and 638 look mint..and are amongst my favourite cleaners.

It's interesting what you say about the handle bails. I have a 475 with a bail painted black. My other 475s and some of the 425s are in storage, so can't check them all straight away. Also I've resprayed some of mine silver. However I'm wondering if, perhaps, Hoover plated some and painted others. Surely, the plating must have been more expensive to do?

I may have one or two items I'd like to have chrome plated, including a Tellus base and possibly some Hoover bails. I expect that this will be expensive..so in no rush..but just curious, who did you use and were they reasonable?
