Hoover Model 28

Hey all!
Relatively new here, always read the forums but never created an account until now. I recently purchased a Hoover Model 28, actually for what I'd say is a steal. Gave $25 for it. The seller's mother purchased it new, comes with all of the attachments (with the exception of the crevice tool) as well as the box for them. My question is, who would be able to tell me anything about them? I'm aware that production ran from around 1946-1950, but is there a more specific time? The stamp on the bottom of the vacuum says 'July 1952'. My next question is about how to change the lightbulb as it went out. Does the hood come off? Pics to come once I'm able to take them, and any feedback is appreciated.

Hi Scott:
While I'm certainly not a Hoover guru, I do know about the 28. I believe it actually came out in '47 because they had to sell the model 27 right after World War II.

It was the middle of the line upright, they sold very well. The date stamp on the bottom is the date it was serviced at a vac shop.

The hood does come off to change the headlight bulb. There are two recessed screws in the bakelite, on either side of the opening for the headlight. Remove the screws and tip the hood back.

Dysonman1:Thank you for telling me that, I wasn't sure if I had dates the cleaner correctly by the serial number on the bottom because it did end in 57. The stamp on the bottom is actually on the housing, not a physical label. But thank you for that! The motor sounds healthy, the only thing to do is fix a rattle (that I believe may be coming from the plate on the bottom of the vacuum , or the brushroll) and see if there is anything I can do for the wiggle in the handle.

She wanted far too much at first, and I warned her it would go for $25 around three months ago.

If you want some help servicing (with a genuine Hoover grease gun, no less!) and an original Hoover bag for your cleaner (and possibly even a correct cord) Feel free to reach out!

When I purchased the machine the seller and her husband actually told me you were interested in it at one point lol. And yeah I think the most I would’ve given being that it had the attachments was probably $35 any more than that and I would’ve just scrolled past it. And thank you for the offer, I’m sure I’m going to have plenty of questions. I replaced the headlight already but now I’m not entirely sure how to remove the brushroll, as the belt is completely shot and needs replaced. Any idea? It looks like there are locking pins but I’m not entirely sure what to do with them.

Belts!

Does anybody know what one might do about finding a belt for this? Is there a certain style that seems to fit it? The closest thing I can think of is a eureka Belt or the older Hoover belts for a decade or convertible. Would these work?

Scott, I just checked my #27 Hoover and the number on this belt is 30563B. Then there is EU STYLE RD which I think is Eureka.I don't know if the original Hoover belt is available, there most likely is a belt with another number. This belt has worked great for me, it's about three years old. Between Hoover and Eureka there is a belt that will work on your machine. If you have a local independent vacuum shop I would take the old belt and see what they have to match. When my Hoover belts stretch out a bit I just put them on a Eureka that takes a slightly larger size. Works for me. Billy

Use a Eureka round belt, the same belt that fits a Sanitaire. Do not use a Hoover Convertible belt, they are too tight.

I’ll look into the Eureka belts. I tried a belt for a convertible and it snapped within maybe two minutes. So looks like I’m ordering belts lol. Thank you for the info. Also I noticed there’s a slight rattle coming from the brush, would anybody know a good way of figuring out where the source might be? It’s not the motor as it sounded really smooth (after the belt broke of course).
