hoover model 28 - need inner bag

hi! i'm a new member with a vintage hoover #28 vacuum cleaner that i picked up from craigslist (free!).

judging by the photos i've seen on this forum, the bag and the power cord/switch have been replaced. that got me wondering what else might have been changed. please see my photo collection at the attached link. the output pipe looks like it too may be a replacement. it's gray plastic, just shy of 2.5 inches in diameter, and it's a little bent out of round.

my immediate question is, are there any modern filter bags that will fit it? does the gray pipe look original?

the 28 never took filter bags. it was a dump bag. yours has a bellows with a fitting for a bag to go over it, it isnt original. c bags should fit that just fine... that looks like a bojack replacement bag from a vac shop.

That's definitely an aftermarket bag, and should take type C Hoover bags as Will mentioned. The model 28 was sold with an exceedingly rare option to use hadisacs like the model 61. These were reusable paper bags that could be emptied through the top by removing a clip.

That bag conversion unit is an Everclean unit, you can use Eureka F&G bags or any generic bag that says "designed to fit most uprights"

cool facts: the bulb still works and its plastic (celluloid?) lens is still in place.

That's a rarity! Most times those lenses are roached! That machine will restore very nicely!

Indeed it will.

Finding a lens is almost impossible. I'm lucky to have a few of them. The others are gone.

i haven't bought any filter bags yet. i found an openable box of size c bags and the holes are too small. i'll keep up the search for sizes f and g. since i can sew, i can always make an inner bag from some scrap fabric.

i tried out the vacuum (without an inner bag) and i'm disappointed in the suction. i haven't taken the whole thing apart, but i probably need new gaskets.

First off, congratulations on getting a nice freebie score from Craigslist! . And it's nice to see a ordinary person with a love for vintage appliances.

Having said that, I think your cleaner having disappointing suction has nothing to do with bad or missing gaskets. Those direct-air uprights really do pick up the air & move it with those large fans! All a bad or missing gasket would do is make the vacuum's bag not filter as effectively. The lack of suction has to do with the fact you have a cleaner from the 1940's....cleaners have evolved a LOT & become much more powerful since then. It is a good cleaner, but a product of it's time nonetheless.

If you decide to use it as a "daily driver", there is one thing you could do for bags. You could put a Kirby filltube & bag adapter on the tube inside the bag & adapt it to use Kirby HEPA Cloth bags. Yes, they would be a little bit larger, but would still work well & provide excellent filtration & also be able to pack the bags full right to the top, whereas paper bags you could only fill 1/2 full before suction drops to the point a bag change is necessary. Don't worry about the cost of the Kirby bags....there are generic Kirby bags found quite easily on Amazon for good prices.
