I finally fixed this thing up. This was my mother's secondary vacuum that she used when she didn't have time to pull out her favorite Rainbow D3. When she upgraded to the Rainbow E3 she bought a Hoover windtunnel self propelled (and me one also as a gift) for her secondary (company will be here in 20 minutes) vacuum.
I was given this thing for sentimental reasons but it always was screeching loud and leaked dust. I finally took it apart and discovered cracks everywhere. The fan, fan housing and even the motor had cracks so guess my father had been using it in the garage as a shop vac every now and then. The brush was a tad bit sluggish but deeply worn. Even with the HEPA type A cloth bags this thing still had me wheezing at the end of use .
I went ahead and dropped the money for a completely new motor unit and new brush roll. I gave it a through cleaning and a little bit of a polishing. It's turned into such a charming machine to use. It's still a bit loud but not harsh on the ears at all. With new seals and the cloth HEPA bags it filters rather well and cleans very well. I'm throughly impressed with the drastic change.
