Why is thoughtful adherence to grammar important for every young lady and gentleman desiring a bright future, including those of mature age?
-Because bad grammar and spelling indicate a lazy intellect that does not care about the impression left behind. This is excusable only in the specially challenged.
-Because Social Interaction conventions support and strengthen clear communications and business networking around the world including translations between languages.
-Because 8 spelling mistakes in a 29 word run-on sentence with no punctuation and capitalization is not "a few spelling mistakes". It is a 27% error rate.
An inadvertent typo or two is common for everyone and overlook-able but when the paragraph is scattered with deliberate contractions of words, lack of attention to punctuation and syntax and sloppy texting on cell phones and tablets, it is wincing painful to decipher. That's what Spell Check is for and folks even ignore its prompts. I cannot seriously take the time to reply to appallingly composed posts like this.
The problem is that this laissez faire attitude spills over into newspaper editorials and stories, school work, term papers and most alarmingly, job resumes.
In my line of work we receive hundreds of resumes from hopefuls. The percentage of essentially unreadable applications riddled with 'Nuspeak' has risen almost to the 30% mark. We used to set them aside in a pile for coffee room amusement but the file tray became a shallow box that became an unmanageable carton set next to the shredder. These people are never called in for interviews but sent a form letter suggesting that they apply elsewhere...and Good Luck in your future prospects.
