Hi All,

I have recently acquired a hoover encore vacuum cleaner, not the encore supreme like the one from my childhood. When I go to turn it on I can hear the motor fire up but then I am greeted by a very harsh squeaking noise, is this the brush or the motor? If it is a bad motor I'm going to be very disappointed but I guess there is not much I can do then.

Hi, run the vac without the belt and brush roll, if the sound is gone then you know it's not the motor...if you still hear the noise, then it's not the brush roll. Isolate as many things as possible for easier diagnosing. Could be a motor or brush roll bearing.

Squealing/squeaking

Or another possibility... it might be the flat belt riding along the motor spindle, and contacting a plastic or metal surface.

UK flat-belt Hoovers had a plastic rib with a metal 'hat', designed to prevent the belt from falling off the end of the motor spindle, by deflecting it back again.

The bulge on the plastic agitator's belt pulley might be worn, allowing the belt to misalign. It is not unknown for the belt to cut through the belt 'dust guard' shields and/or plastic soleplate. You usually notice the smell of burning rubber and plastic too, though.

Other manufacturing methods of getting the belt to ride in the correct position include a bulge on the motor spindle itself, and a metal washer welded to the end of the motor spindle.
