Im attempting to rebuild the 1076 I purchased on ebay a few weeks ago. I took apart the machine, threw the bag in the washing machine and gave the machine a bath. The machine has that old vacuum smell, like it had been sitting in an unfinished basement since the begining of time. I was able to get the odor almost completely out of the bag but it still has a slight smell. I washed the base and used some dish soap. I didnt want to ruin the paint anymore than it already is, so i figured some Dawn would be ok. What does everyone else use to wash the vacs they rebuild? I was able to remove all the dirt and almost all of the smell. Is this smell something that is just a part of the machine that I should just learn to live with? I now need to rebuild the motor, replace the cord, and change the brush roller bearings. Does anyone know where I can get a genuine hoover cord for this machine? I looked on hesco for motor bearings and brushes but Im unsure which ones are correct for my machine. If anyone knows which brushes, bearings for the motor and brush roller are the correct items, i would really aprriaite it! Is it possible to purchase a new brush roller and bearings as a set? I saw a new replacement motor on hesco for $99, is that a good deal?
Im also looking for a Convertible model 4103, if anyone has one they are interested in selling, please let me know.

Sorry for so many questions but I haven't completely rebuilt a vac myself yet. This site is the best place to pick the brains of all the club members and learn from their expertise!

Sometimes those older machines just have an odor.. I'd suggest maybe washing the bag one more time, and use some nice-smelling detergent such as Gain.

As far as the cord goes-do you want a new, black, genuine replacement? Or something original? Something maybe not original, but white/tan?

The agitator brushes could be either one of two different part numbers: 012998BZ (curves to the left) or 160646-- (curves to the right).

The motor bearings are as follows:
Upper: 42932002
Lower: 019829--

The carbon brushes are: 47318012

The brushroll will probably have the older style bearings in it... which are part number: 012978--. The complete brushroll is not available anymore, but all of the parts you need to rebuild it are.

When washing a machine--or parts of a machine--I usually use Simple Green, and Dish Soap... depending on what parts I'm cleaning. The other thing you can do to try to get the smell out of the bag is to just let it hang outside for a few days... preferably in an enclosed/screened in porch.

Fred thats the blue full hood Elite/Estate model from 1977, the deluxe version to the U4101 your parents had.
If I remember you did have at least one extra of those...
