Hoover Convertible or Eureka?

I was wondering what your guys' opinion was on this. Would you'd rather have a Hoover Convertible or a F&G type Eureka. They are both extremely popular and similar. I personally think the Eurekas clean better but the looks go to Hoover. But if could only collect one, I think I'd go with the Hoovers. What about you?

I would have to say..

i like the looks of both types of machines but i would have to say convertibles clean better. (then again it also depends on the eureka model and brushroll)

I currently have no Eurekas in my collection besides a Rotomatic PN. Although they do clean very well! I personally prefer Hoover over Eureka any day. It really doesn't make a difference to me which one cleans better. 


 


Eureka are great vacuums I just prefer Hoovers. But that’s just my opinion. <span> </span>

I prefer Eurekas. I love the vibra groomer brushrolls, and the amazing sound of the motor is so nice to me. But I must agree, looks go to Hoover. They used much nicer colors and variations than Eureka. But over all, it would be Eureka F&G's

I recently found an Electrolux Aptitude upright (in the trash, with a clogged hose) that I really enjoy using. And I guess it’s technically a Eureka of sorts. I really like the variable speed control. They seem to be a pain to find bags for.

hmmm...Good question!  When Hoover was using the Type C bag, I would have given the edge to Eureka for its F&G bag set up.  But when Hoover went to the Type A bag, I'd have to say that the advantage swung back to Hoover.  I think that Hoover's Type A design is better and Hoover belts seem to last longer.  But they both clean very well and they both have some very nice aesthetic designs too.

But I also Love Eurekas!


Depends on the age I suppose. Ill take a 50s or early 60s convertible over most eureka uprights. Ill take a boxtop eureka or older cordaway upright over a late 60s to newer convertible.

I may be biased, but I really feel the Eureka uprights sold in the same years as the Hoover Convertibles were better carpet cleaners. This is simply for two reasons. One was obviously Eureka's top fill F&G dust bags which kept a clean path for air to flow into the bag. The other was the front end height adjusters (Rugulator or Dial-A-Nap). It always seemed that adjusting the working end of the machine provided a better alignment for the cleaner on the carpet. Convertibles adjusted the rear wheels, and so the front was always at some odd angle to the carpet surface.

In Consumer Reports testing, even the old 260 was deemed a superior cleaner of carpets (even though it was not recommended due to the floor scratching caused by the Bottom Plate when used with attachments). By the 1970's Eureka uprights were consistently rated higher than any Convertibles. It was only with the arrival of the Concept uprights that Hoover became a real competitor to Eureka in the upright category.

um.........I MUST insist on a

HOOVER !! !! !!I, too, have no Eurekas, and am certain there will be none in the future. I did have to use one in the rectory, years ago. NOT bashing, just my preference.

I'd have to say Eureka. I feel that they clean better, though I don't like the F&G bags. I wish Eureka had gone to a semi ridged fill tube like Kirby, Hoover and Royal. That would make a good vacuum even better.

Hoover For Sure

Hoover brand is my favorite for so many reasons, and above all I would say not just personally, but as an icon, the Convertible wins! Eureka brand while a competitor somehow never captured my interest, save for two models: Eureka Imperial upright (box-style bag), and the Freedom cordless upright (world's first). Obviously Hoovers outsold Eurekas, but my favorite was the Eureka Twin Power Automatic with the F & G bag. I liked the rugulator in the 2000 series. I told someone earlier, that I bought one of those and the vacuum store still had a nos square handle with the two speed switch on the back, like the Model 260's. I had them switch handles. That was my favorite vac of all times, but when the ESP series came out I just had to have one and traded in......So sorry I did that. Now I am trying to find another one that is similar....


 


I agree with whoever said hoover did a much better job with colors. It was a joy to see all the different colors they came out with.


 


Also let me say this. Anyone buying either a Hoover or Eureka at that time would have ended up with an excellent cleaner.

But to me the 250, 255, and 260 with the Disturbulator brushroll is far and away a better carpet cleaner than the newer Eurekas, as for Hoovers, I have a few but just never was a Hoover person, I think the reason why is in 1969 when I was 4 my parents put down wall to wall ugly green loop pile carpet " My Mom and her Sister HAD to have GREEN!!!! everything", anyway, Mom went to the Family Stamp store and for a BUNCH of stamp books got an 1140 Dial a Matic, of course I wanted an Electrolux because my Aunt had a Tan G that wasn't but a year old then!!! then in 1978 I BEGGED!!her to buy a Super J, she bought a Celebrity II Powermatic, which cleaned well...but wasnt a Electrolux " I hadnt really learned about Compacts and Filter Queens yet!, So that is why I think I never was interested in Hoovers, it was not that they were not good, because they are I just always thought if you bought it from a salesman, and it cost more, it was better, I dont think that now, or at least not as much, but im 45 and not 14!!!An Electrolux to my mind was a status symbol...only the kids Moms I knew who were " Rich" had electroluxes LOL!! And at that age,you are constantly thinking about what everyone else thinks..

I'm definitely a Hoover man, through and through (duh!).. but I think it really depends on what kind of carpet is being cleaned.  I think that most of the early Convertibles don't really clean today's modern wall to wall carpets very well (thick, heavy plush, frieze);  they weren't designed to clean that type of carpet. Not totally sure about the Eureka end of that; I don't have enough experience using early Eurekas in a modern setting.


 


I agree that Hoover did much better with the colors.. And I also think there was a point in time where Eureka really gave Hoover a run for their money as far as performance goes.  It almost seemed like Hoover got too blind-sighted by cost-cutting in the late 70's and Eureka used that to their advantage. 


 


My favorite Eureka is probably the Green early 80's 2-speed ESP upright (not sure of the model #), it has the switch on the front of the handle, and a green stripe up the side of the bag.  My next-door neighbor had one when I was a kid, and always just loved the looks of it.  I have one packed away in a box, in mediocre cosmetic condition (but great running condition) that I was using as a daily driver for a while when I was living in Milwaukee, then NC.  I would love to find a nicer example of it sometime.  I did see one on eBay a few years back, but was too late to bid on it.

I should also say that I do have a fabulous Eureka that Robert found at an estate sale... We took it to Fred N's house a little over a year ago, and gave it a makeover.  It's really one of my favorite cleaners to use -- such an elegant machine, and it just purrs.  But one of the rear wheels broke completely off, and while I do have a replacement wheel on a donor machine, I need to get around to fixing it.

Hoover

although not an upright vacuum person, Hoover will always have my heart...along with Kenmore...I have the 1030 with the 1031 tools{never used} from my childhood. Purchased before I was born but remember the vacuum as a child...and playing with it constantly, as this became a spare. My parents purchased a Kenmore Powermate Canister in 1975... ahhhh the memories...haha
