Hoover 634 - Opinions?

Greetings All,

I have a completely original 634 in nice shape. I'm curious as to the rarity and desirability of this machine from a collector's standpoint.

I've been told that since this is an "economy" model (even though it's mechanically as bulletproof as the 63) it's not as sought after as a top of the line version.

Any thoughts from you Hoover experts out there? I know I've only seen maybe two of them in my years of collecting.

Well since they were the economy model they aren't very common and so are considered rare. I agree though that even though rare they don't seem to bee highly collectible. I have 2 of them but I'd love to find one with original bag.

634

The 634 was a department store model. It was also known as a, "Promotional Model". At the same time the model 63 was still being door to door.

At or around this time frame, (1954), Hoover department store displays became envogue with the full product line. Shortly after, Hoover discontinued door to door sales and the vacuums were found in the higher end department stores. The budget models were known as the promotional models.

IMHO, the 634 used a unique color scheme that was very pleasing to the eye. My Aunt had one and I really liked using it. She had all the tools as well. Changing the bag was not as easy as the zipper models but still it did have a paper bag.

That series is so beautiful and cleans better than a Convertible of you ask me ( and for those of you who don't...just scroll past!)
I have a 29, 62, and 63. If I did not have my 150 they would be daily drivers!

She's a Dandy

I'll try to post some pictures of it. It's a really nice machine, original bag is even in nice shape. I also have the original tools in the original Hoover caddy.

I'd happily trade it though if I could just manage to find a 28, 26 or a 704 convertible. I'd put cash with it too!!

I have one

That is very nice, I got a lot of really nice hoovers in the great Ohio vacuum haul,a 150 a 25,26,27 and 28 along with 2 Larks, a 29 and 634 and a bunch off older Convertibles,All are SOOO much better than the garbage being pawned off on consumers today.Also several VERY early models I would have to look to tell you what they are, I know a 800 is one of them.

Nice Find!

I have one too, all original except for the plug! Great cleaner and smooth runner. I also have the 29, 62, 63, and 64. The 29 is all original except the cord and the bag, same with the 62. The 63 is all original except the cord, and the 64 is all original. Here are pics of all of them, with the 634 first, then the 29, 62, 63, and 64.

When was the model 29 produced? Was it offered alongside the model 62 or 63 as the economy model? I'd love to get my hands on one (as well as a 634) as I have the model 62, 63 and 64 Citation.

Mine completed my '50s lineup. It's true: it was a promo... to get you into the store, usually to buy something else.

Actually, let me clear up some info.

After further, indepth research into this vacuum, I can tell y'all this:
the Hoover model 634 was NOT a "promotional" item. It was an ANNIVERSARY edition... meaning, if a dept store, dealer, hardware store, what have you, was celebrating THEIR anniversary, HOOVER would provide this model for them to sell, at a discount.Dates of production are:1-12-1955 to 1-31-1956... price was $79.95 (retail price), almost 64,000 units were manufactured.
Then, upon the "Convertible" bursting onto the scene, some Convertible models were considered "promotional",
I just love to be able to clear up any misconceptions, or perhaps cloudy details.
So, now, go and run your still pefectly working Hoover 634

I just bought this one today at a thrift store. It's got the original outer bag but a replacement aftermarket power cord. I'm wondering if the switch has been replaced, too, or were those Hoover used in the '50s black? It had leaked dust from the Type A bag(s) that had been used in it. It needs a spa treatment, but the motor sounds fine.
