Hello all! I have recently acquired my grandmothers Hoover 1030! It's my first convertible and I really like it! However, when I recently used it, it was shaking violently, and I took the old, 30-40-year-old original brushroll out that was rusted. The bearings are shot and I just want to get a new brushroll. I'm looking at the CWP but I've heard horror stories about them. Any advice ASAP would be appreciated! Thanks!
Your vibration issue is likely due to a bent brush roll body. In other words, the whole thing has been bowed over time by being stored with a belt pulling on it. You can check for a bowed brush roll body by installing the roller without a belt attached and spinning it by hand with the machine unplugged. Look at the gap between the center of the brush roll and the bottom plate as you spin the brush roller. If you see this gap changing as the brush roll wobbles around, you will need a whole new brush roll body. Bearings alone will not solve your problem.
If the bearings are in fact your issue, you can replace them Thankfully, there are still plenty around. Frequently, though, I do not replace the bearings. I simply clean them out and refill them with high-temperature synthetic grease.
My convertible had a bent brush roll. I found another brush roll which was not bowed but was rusty. I took all the rust off with a wire wheel and repainted it. The thread below details what I did.
