Building a vacuum is more difficult than you think. I have built my own shop vac from 5 gallon buckets, though. And it took a LOT of work.

ok the motor is a direct air.the brushroll, belt and brushroll and brushroll housin are form a electrolux powernozzle(from a super j pn-1).the base is made out of wood.the handle is made out of coopre pipe.the switch is just a toggle switch.

In one of the '50's Popular Mechanics magazines they show how to make a shop vac from an older Hoover direct air upright-they fabricated a lid for the Hoover motor to sit on-Then made a cloth filter to go over its fan intake(I would have used the orig Hoover bag-more filter area-for this application the motor and bag would only deal with the VERY FINE dust-the lid rested on a 5Gal metal can-the base of the can had a wood drawer and base assembly-this collected the large chips and shavings, nails.and the base had casters on it.The homemade vacuum was for dry pickup only.It could also be used like a dust collector at a power tool. And another old PM magazine showed an older Hoover upright used as a dust collector on a belt sander.A Premeir vacuum yeilded its motor for a homemade pad oscillating sander. These magazines had more "build it items" than similar magazines today.
