Hey Tom A. I Found a NEW Thrift Store!!!!!

Hi Tom, Talked with my friend Andy the other day, and he told me about a new thrift store that opened up not far from his house. Thought I would check it out, and lo and behold!..................A Hoover Convertible Estate !!!

Did a complete disassembly on it and cleaned it all up. It was full of sawdust, but otherwise very good. This is the two speed model that is on HIGH speed when the handle is upright, and automatically switches to LOW speed when the handle is retracted for carpet sweeping.........

Picked this Hoover Decade 80 up at our favorite thrift store in Canton the other day. This is the vacuum that you gave me the light bulbs for......... It too was in great condition but very filthy, so again I did a complete disassembly and it turned out very well.

This is the Power Surge model, but honestly Ive never found it to be of much use. It cleans very well on its regular speed, just like you expect a Hoover to!

Also got this not long ago, which is a very pretty vac, a Singer based Kenmore. Two Speed model with a neat 70's mod style bag. It was a mess when I got it, but it came out pretty well........I love these vacs, Im not sure why, I guess cause they are kind of funky in both design and use. But they sure are neat and they do work very well, alas kind of noisily tho...........

All three of the vacs shown here have the SHAG setting on them. Just in time for the "New" Sokols Sculptured Autumn Shag carpet you installed in your Vac display room........

The Kenmore/Singer is of course the Twin Fan design, kind of noisy, with the 2 Speed switch on the motor housing....AND has the internal handle operated switch, that automatically turns the vac on or off as the handle is lowered or raised. I LOVE this feature !

Nice finds. I have the single speed Singer and the blue single speed Kenmore versions with a slightly different flower bag. Noisy, no LOL

Wow Jimmy...you have been very busy I see! You have a great find there in the Hoover Convertible Estate...mine is a Convertible Elite but is otherwise the same model and number. That one is from 1977 and was Hoover's first top fill bag. Like you said they moved the speed switch to the handle and changed the tools to front conversion. They also monkeyed with the handle for the first time since the 1920's. This model was very changed. Glad to hear that your grey Decade is doing well. They both really clean carpet very well. The Singer is very unusual to me. I too like the design and the overall "funkiness" of the machine. Too bad they were so noisy! You will have to give me the details on the new thrift shop...enquiring minds want to know! I am loving the shag...had the family over for Easter and showed them. They did not understand how cool it was but they did remember our neighbors having the same carpet in their family room. Like I said it is fun to vacuum! Thanks for the pics Jimmy!

Jimmy, great Hoover finds. I remember working on all of them, encluding the Kenmore in my vac shop in the 80's. They were definately a sign of the times with the shag settings.

My first dealings with a Singer/Kenmore twin fan was about 10 years ago. I'd come home on vacation to my moms and she had one in the linen closet. So I set to vacuuming her livingroom which is carpeted in a very thick plush. It was like pushing a brick across the carpet at every setting including the shag one. I fiddled with it, checked it out, nothing, everything was as it should be but it just couldn't be adjusted to smoothly roll across thick plush. Oh and the noise. So I ran out and bought her a Panasonic Jet Flo, what a difference, she still uses it. They work fine on less than plush carpeting actually they work very well, very aggressive.

mom had a BOL Kenmore version. problem is they have too much suction. yes, you can have too much suction. IMO one of the rare instances where venting on the nozzle opening would help.

glenn from AW.org uses a Singer on his deep plush carpet. the kind of deep plush that can hold lots of dirt. i used my 913 on this carpet and there was NO dirt!

but the noise level is a deal-breaker!
