Here's an idea to separate 'ancient' vacs from Vintage

It's a tricky term - vintage - as the years continue to advance. Here's the thing - The machines that interest most of us 'oldsters' come from our childhoods and even earlier if your Gramma still had her's predating our birth. Naturally we tend to gravitate to those magnificent sturdy cast and formed metal vacuums that followed WW2. Once you are entranced by the engineering and styling you develop a curiosity for what came before. Domestic Vacuum Cleaners go back a mere 100 years. Many if not most of this founding group of collectors have scant interest in the Plastic Era Contemporary vacuums available today and they are intruding on what used to be Vintage territory. Not that we want to obliterate the past nor deny the present, but wish to explore the larger view of where and how appliances developed to the versions we have in the present. So little historical attention is drawn or discussed by the new folks that they have no recourse but to scour the ample Archives, if so inclined.

From my point of view at the young age of 61 I fully expect another 20, maybe 30 years of Vacuum enthusiasm. It sure would be nice the have a Forum devoted to the oldest vacs without the clutter of sharing with vacuums only 20 years old, as we approach 2015.

I'd like to propose splitting VINTAGE into two sections/buttons. And due to the rise of plastics I'd suggest 1960 as the dividing point. No division is perfect, of course but at a 55 years back point, as of 2015, those interested would have an easier time relating to and commenting on eras closer to their favorite period.
And as the years pass I further suggest that the 50 year mark should be maintained at 50 while the 20 year mark advances annually. By example, in 2016 the 50 mark would become 51, while the 20 year mark would remain at 20.

What to call the new buttons?
Since 'ancient' or 'pre-Vintage' are unsatisfactory terms I suppose the only option is:
Vintage 1 - The forum for vintage Vacuum Cleaners that are at least 50 years old.
Vintage 2 - The forum for vintage Vacuum Cleaners that are at least 20 years old.
Contemporary continues as The forum for current Vacuum Cleaners less than 20 years old.

In a related and similar train of thought...

Perhaps there is no room for an additional button but in a 'opening-a-can-of-worms' discussion, as a paid member it irks me that I cannot access the Junior Forum. I'm not alone in this opinion. We members have no idea what goes on there and whether mis-information is being distributed. Instead we hear about it on the other Vacuum web groups.
What are the participation and activity percentages of JUNIOR?
If the traffic is high then we are all missing something. If the traffic is low, then why bother to provide for it?
Is the JUNIOR Forum and Button really necessary any more?

As a group of dedicated, enthusiastic Admirers, Collectors and Mentors of all things Vacuum-ish does it not seem reasonable that the old timers have something to share with the younger set?

Suggestions, respectful rants and lively discussion is encouraged to test where the wind is blowing.

Sincerely for the greater good of Vacuumland,
Old Davy

Believe me, you are missing nothing from the Junior Forum. Not only is it almost consistently quiet, but most of the threads actually pertaining to vacuums are about Dyson. While I'm thankful the forum was created, at present moment it's nothing special, especially for those most interested in vintage machines.

I would second your idea for a second Vintage forum. I do not consider 1994 even remotely vintage. <span style="font-size: 12pt;">I would argue for 40 years being the cut off point. </span><span style="font-size: 12pt;"> I tend to put that label on machines produced prior to the mid-1970s, but I was also born in a different time than you. </span>

Anyway, I don't want to complain too much. I'm just happy this site exists.

I thought that ...

... the term "vintage" loosely means from a previous generation and beyond.

And a "generation" is loosely considered roughly 30 years ...

Thank you Dave for your feedback, it is important to let me know how you feel.

This is exactly why I created the new tagging system. This will allow us to tag posts with the era of machines that the post relates to. I'm giving it a bit of time to get a few hundred new posts tagged then I plan on expanding the system. You'll be able to click on the tag Pre-1950 vacuum cleaners and it will filter out everything else. You'll be able to save that as a favorite in your browser if you wish as well. That is why I broke the Vintage Forum up into three categories, Pre-1950, Mid-Century and 80's-90's Plastic era vacuums. I also plan on allowing upgraded members to go back and tag older threads that have not been tagged, or update tagged threads that are incorrectly tagged. All this will take a bit of time to implement, but it will alleviate the need for any extra forums. It will be no different than having 12 or so forums, without the clutter of actual extra forums.

As for the Junior Forum, it was created originally because you and others were complaining about the "Twitter/Facebook" writing style of the younger members. We told them that if they try to write and behave as best as they can, they would gain access to some more features and a forum all to themselves. Since the Adults have the Miscellanea Forum, which Junior members cannot access, we figured it was only fair that the Junior members have a place of their own. This has worked out extremely well and you are not missing anything of great interest to the average adult. They currently have threads such as "Songs", "Your Dream Car", "Saw something while playing a video game", "Computers", "Skateboarding", "Pets", etc. etc. While Fred and I both check this forum daily to make sure all is safe and well, there is absolutely no need for the adults to access this forum, upgraded or not. We never post in there, only monitor it. The Junior members can and do post vacuum related posts in all of the other forums if they want to share their post with the adults or they can talk vacuums among themselves, whichever they choose.

Is the JUNIOR Forum and Button really necessary any more?
Absolutely.

Robert. Thank you.
I sorta figured the tagging system could have this sort feature and I guess I jumped the gun to get a clearer understanding. I look forward to the day it is implemented.
I was distressed as I watched selfishly interesting 'ancient' vac threads get swamped & perhaps not read & ultimately forgotten, dropping off the list among the more popular +1980s threads.

As for the Junior Forum I'm relieved to hear it is harmless.

Thank you again for your & Fred's thoughtful stewardship. This site is not only invaluable but a great pleasure in my day.

(also spend much of my browsing time over at Washerland)

Like said above, you're not missing a thing! look at it this way, We Juniors don't have a clue what's going on in Miscellanea!

I'm a Junior,

And I neither know nor care what happens over there. If it's all about Dysons and video games, then I couldn't care less!
