I began to get chided and reprimanded by my parents -- and teased by my siblings -- for my interest in vacuum cleaners. I knew, even at 6-7 years old, that this made my parents uncomfortable. Mama's finger-wagging mantra got to be, as we'd be driving over to someone's house to visit, "YOU stay AWAY from their SWEEPER!" Of course, I always made a bee-line for the "sweeper closet," because it was simply an "irresistible force!"
