I won the bellows assy last year from Ebay- it came from a scrapped 638 apparently, makes it much nicer to empty and obviously improves filtration!

Hoover "Hernia 954"

I always liked these big heavy Hoovers. When I was a little kid, one of my uncles was the associate pastor for a large church in Richmond Virginia and the church had two of these. One time when we were there I spent the entire morning vacuuming the aisle carpeting of the spatious sanctuary with one of the Hoovers! I loved the big fat bag - it was just enormous! - and the way it took the motor such a long time to revv up and wind down. Fun!

Those would have been older specimens though, probably from the 1950s.

thats very nice, seamus. and an interesting/alien bag material? and they sold these in the uk in 1984? when was this style discontinued (in the uk)? the lack of headlamp, and that homely font that spells *commercial* on the front also stick out.

Yep Iknow what you mean about the motor- its also much quieter than you imagine it should be(The fact that its only 325W obviously has a lot to do with that). The bag is indeed huge- see the pic below, I forgot to post it lol!.

This style of Hoover ran from the early 50s to approx 1989 in the UK. There are 3 models- excuse the non eacct dates .

912- 1950ish to 1965 ish. Black painted motor hood, headlight, old style handlegrip(think the black chunky style with HOOVER embossed vertically). Bag grey with HOOVER in red lettering in the usual vertical fashion. Bumper of the usual type. This would be basically your 91??. This was a earthed/grounded machine.

912A 1965 ish to 1978. The same with the exception of the motor hood was now the same colour as the base and the newer plastic handle grip and new style switchplate was fitted. Although the model number didnt change I believe there are 2 versions of this, the difference being the use of imperial/metric screws etc. Also I believe late examples are double Insulated as opposed to being earthed- this would be your 913, of which yours is a VERY nice example- I love the bag design of the US versions!.

U7008 1978ish to 1989ish. As the pics, with the exception of very early examples that had a black bag and the Hoover roundall and Heavy Duty were orange. This is a double insulated model and dosent need Earthing- if you look at the rating plate of mine the square within a square shows this. -This would be your U7037.

The bag is correct and original to this example- its quite thick and pretty stiff. See pic for its inflated state lol!

thanks for the info, seamus. i dont think the american versions were ever double insulated. the later versions here were "grounded". i had no idea production continued until 89! and the motor wattage, wow. 325 is wierd. mine is 400 watts, and its a late 1960s model. why the discrepancy, i wonder?

for the photo of the big fat bag! IIRC on the older series, the bag, which was dark gray with thin silver pinstriping (?), was even fatter than this one wasn't it? And more rounded off on the top? This bag reminds me of an older Kirby bag somewhat, with the more squared-off top.

Its been a few years since ive used an earlier example, but your description of the bag sounds about right . We never had the "Fancy" script on the bags- Maybe David could do the honours with a pic .

As far as I know from Jeff P the model 90 was the 1st US model of this design and was a similar colour to the 61- this was built in North Canton as were I think he told me earlier 91s. Either during the run of the 91 or starting with the 913 production was moved to Perivale in the UK. Quite why this was the case I cant really work out- especially given the weight of these!!, maybe it was to do with plant capacity etc??.

I have a feeling the 912/A may well have been 400w- will have to check with someone that has one!. Obviously the U7008 is an exception as it dosent have one, but Hoover had a habit over here of including the Dirtfinder lamp in the wattage figure so generally the motor wattage is 25w less than stated.

I believe this design went on quite a bit longer in the UK that the US in the same way our last model Convertible/DAM was 1989!!.

I have a U7008 from 1980, all the way from Brisbane Australia! Mine has a Conquest bag on it, as the original was not in the best of shape.
Seamus you are correct this cleaner began as model 90 in 1940, an overgrown model 90. Model 90 was 2-tone brown(you can see an unused model 90 in the "See it Clean" section)
Following WWII it was model 91 in the black and grey.
I am not sure when production shifted totally to the UK, I do know these were made in all three major plants(North Canton, Hamilton, and Perivale) thru the end of the 1950's.
I'd venture that Seamus is correct that production of these stopped in North Canton due to plant capacity, namely because Convertible production REALLY took off in the early 60's and a much needed addition to the main plant would not be finished until 1968.
Thats a beautiful machine Seamus! Does it have screw in brushes or slide in style?

Unfortunatly the original had lost almost all its paint so it had been replaced with a new pattern replacement(you wouldnt really know to look at it tho). It takes the same nylon slide in brush strips and has beater bars the same as the original. .

Is that you U7008 on the Hooverland Homepage being guarded by Jack??. If so that bag is exactly the same as the early U7008s had over here. If you look in Kev Coxs photos you will see his unused 1978 example.

I have the owners manual for that U7008, it was purchased in 1980.

Hey Seamus - just thought I'd add the 912 was marked at 400w, whereas the 912A/U7008 was only 325w - however, Clark says the motor is actually identical, and the wattage descrepancy is due to the way that motor power was calculated...I'm sure he'll explain better, I'm hopeless with anything involving numbers!

that I remember!!! Wow, what a rush of memories to see it! I have not seen one of those original bags since I was 9-10 years old. Amazing that I would have recalled it so clearly, eh!
