Has anyone ever seen one of these???

I picked this up at the Hoover Store. It was a trade in and they gave it to me. I have run across three or four of them which leads me to believe that it was not a homemade job. Let me know what you think. It is a model 800 with no other markings.

WOW! I'm interested to see that! Never come across one before in any of my research...could it just be a Special model? I notice a few specs of red paint on the chassis, though - is this the same colour as the motor, or has it dripped on during someone's home-DIY project? If not, I'm sure Hoover would have taken more care than that if they reconditioned it themselves...

Hi Tom, most unusual vac colour, almost looks like primer, most probably a re-build rather than customized I would think, hey Jack dont start getting ideas for all your spare machines....lol

...could it be an Anniversary special? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 800 came out in 1933, didn't it? Hoover's 25th anniversary! I've seen 60th anniversary and 90th anniversary Hoover cleaners with unique colour schemes (although both on Ebay Germany, oddly enough), and in 1935 Hoover also built a Jubilee model Junior 370, which all indicates that the company liked to indulge in special models.

The badge suggests to me that it was built this way; I can't imagine a reconditioner taking such care over it (it looks like a well-done job), and if it were a Hoover rebuild, it'd surely have a 'Hoover Special' type badge fitted as a replacement.

Just my two pence worth! Are you going to keep it as is, Tom? That colour does give the cleaner a certain something!

Yes, I am going to keep it as is. I have an original one in my collection along side of my "regular" 800. Hoover did in fact celebrate 25 years but they did so in 1932 going by the original patent date of 1907. I have NEVER read anything on this model. I have seen 3 or 4 of them. This particular machine is just dirty and no those red spots are darker than the paint on the motor cover. The badge to me makes it seem factory. I do not think it is a rebuild but that was my best guess. I just thought I might throw it out there to everyone and see what you all thought. Thanks!

Hoover redheads

Tom,

The red motor covers on Hoover 800's, etc., are called red heads. Machines having these motor covers were to be used as demonstrators only.

Collector and Vacuum Restorer Bob Kautzman knows about these and has one. He thought these covers were first used on the Model 575.

Thanks for the information. This explanation makes sense to me. I am not sure why I have found so many 800s. I have never seen a "red head" 575 or any other model for that matter. If only this machine could talk! Think of the tales it would tell. Now, I just wonder what kind of bag that they would have used originally?
