hard surface flooring adaptors for upright vacuums

how can i adapt my Hoover Clean & light to work on hard surface flooring? it lacks a brushroll on/off switch but as i don't have a carpet or rug, so i could simply remove the brushroll as it sends a lot of sand etc. out the back... like the agitation though, as our ancient floors have deep cracks warps & sparations that trap dirt. I thought i saw a sponge like adaptor for this situation (which encircled the brushroll opening on the bottom of the vac) but don't recall for sure. i also remember Oreck touting a strip on the XL seies which catches the expelled debris when vacuuming on hard surfaces, maybe get one of those & retro fit it to my Oreck knock-off?

This is why I have cannisters AND uprights, one's better suited to one cleaning method that the other doesn't do to well with, so hard floors get the cannisters and carpeted usually an upright (though my Tristar CXL gets used on carpet as it's got a PN where the Miele doesn't), so I'd suggest just getting a separate cannister vac...

And looking up that Hoover model, yeah, I don't think it's meant for hard floors, you could probably get by through unhooking the belt, but after a while that would probably get too annoying (hence why vacs like Kirbys have a belt lifter to remove the belt for such things)...

Our apartment is very tiny & with my family of four, well as the locals say, fer-getaboudit! one vac that stores nice & compact, (like, well, the Hoover Clean & Light does as a matter of fact) would be great. Although I may add a metropolitan hand vac for edge work (see link). The Clean & Light takes a Royal B bag which i can get a HEPA version of at a nice price, & our allergies like that. & again, the vac stores upright without a long hose & attachments to bother with...

I would use industrial strength Velcro...

or two screws, or somthting to mount a floor brush to a Filter Queen straight suction rug tool with a rubber squeegee glued to it. I can see it in my mind. When I get to work tomorrow I'll see if I can be a bit more specific and post.

If you haven't the room for a canister cleaner, you may want to look into the Hoover Flair model S2200, which is a slim, lightweight stick cleaner with amazingly high suction and two rows of bristles in the nozzle which can be extended for hard floors or retracted for carpets. It does a commendable job of cleaning bare floors, and stores away in very little space-there is even a small opening in the handgrip to hang it on the wall.

and the Hoover flair...

would accept a wand so you could use a dust brush or crevice tool. An upholstery tool would fit on the cleaner end. Just a thought.

And it's a very good thought! Now that you mention it, you could use any of the small nozzle attachments that come with the newer Hoover uprights with friction-held tools, including the small turbine-driven brush-an arrangement that would prove handy for carpeted stairs.

Hoover Flair

First off, thanks everybody for putting 'your think caps on' toward a good cause ;-).

The Flair, hum never saw one of those...if i didn't already have the new Clean & Light maybe, but i may also want the better filtration i can get elsewhere. Same problem with the Hoover PortaPower i like so much, basic paper sack is as good as it gets for filtration( but combing the two? still tempting, see link).

Trebor, (the Hoover flair)" would accept a wand"... a stick vac with a wand on the bottom? or did you mean it would accept the tools that would normally be found on a wand?

Many of the Amazon reviews are a little worrisome for the Flair, seems a bit fragile. What got me started in this hobby was trying to avoid disposable vacuums...

I really think there is an answer in attaching something(s) to the bottom of my vac so it doesn't spit debris out the back then i'm good to go. Like the velcro thought in this regard.

Just looked at the bottom of a Royal lightweight...

same as a Hoover Clean n' Light. Take a squeegee blade and make two small U shaped cuts to go over the dividers in the nozzle opening, and attach narrow extra-strength Velcro in-between the cuts, and between the dividers. The squeegee will need to be of the sort that narrows to a thin line at the edge. Too much on the floor will drag and make it hard too push.
