Happy 100th birthday, HOOVER!

Today, it is exactly 100 years since J.M Spangler was granted the patent for his 'Carpet Sweeper and Cleaner' on June 2nd, 1908 <br
Here's the earliest ad in my collection, from 1907:

And one of the earliest Model Os:

Painted black, with a bright red sateen bag, which contained an inner bag of cheesecloth. This was soon changed to the more familiar blue/grey-with-red-decalomania, because housewives found the black and red version too intimidating!

I don't know if I would call the Hoover "O" pictured a "little machine"!

The only Model O I've seen in person:

And even with half of it cut away, was still really heavy!

In 1909...

there was the Senior - the front wheels were moved from beside the suction opening to behind it, so the cleaner could lift the carpet and gently beat against it to remove the trodden-in grit. The first cleaner ever to do this!

And in 1910...

There was this machine...I don't know for sure which model this is - it could be a Model 2...

In 1911...

This machine is beginning to look a lot more like the later Hoovers...note smaller bag attached to chassis with bag ring. At this point, the bags were still being hand-sewn by J.M. Spangler's wife and daughter!

Hi Clark,

no, sadly my 'The One Show' appearance will not coincide with the 100th Anniversary itself. The date I've been given is Thursday 19th June. There is a small possibility that this may change, but if it does, I'll let you know.
