Last night, I turned it on, and got "hum". I looked at the reset. pressed it, got hum again. ten nothing. It might be time. Ideas?

This sounds familiar - just went through this a few months back...
Motor is stalled.
Either something is stuck in there, seals have gummed up over long period of disuse, or rust buildup and expansion has occurred.
Turn power off and unplug.
Look inside to see if a foreign object is in there; if so, remove with tongs.
If not...
If you have a little wrench to insert at the bottom, use it to try to break it free.
If that fails, use a plastic or wooden broomstick to pry on the internal rotating hammers to try to get bottom plate to turn.
If hammers break off like mine did, rust had taken its toll and it needs replacement. It it just wont budge, then it also would need replacement.
Mine was a Sears Kenmore with a 5 year warranty. It was 5.5 years old when it broke - good timing on their part.
If I planned on living here much longer I would rid the disposal and install a second sink basket as I never use the disposal.

I use this thing everyday. It is 24 years old. It's an Insinkerator. It just 'died'. I'll try again.

Sounds like you eliminated stuck seals or expanded rust.
It is also possible this thing may have a start capacitor.
Take the bottom cover plate off and check. If so, it may have died from age. Either check it or try replacing it. 24 years is impressive. All mine had rusted out in 5-10 years...

Well, you're absolutely correct
about that. Thankfully, no Kirby anything was even around.
24 yrs ago, my aunt dropped a silver dollar down there. Nobody knew. It broke a hole in the can, spewing shredded grapefruit all over the cabinet. But, the blade still worked!

If you do end up replacing your unit, I suggest you buy one with stainless steel grinding chamber. I suspect your current model is all or partly made of s.s. 24 years is great. It costs more but it will pay off down the road. The higher the price the more sound insulation they have too.My friend just paid 300.00 for a new ISR that came with a 12 yr. warrantee. Texaskirbyguy gave you some good advice to try first, hope things work out for you.

I'm a little uneasy about installing it myself.

A very good friend came today and installed the new one. It's bigger, stronger, yet lighter than the old one. I really have good friends.
It's the 3rd one in 35 yrs. The first one had to be repaired as, my mother accidentally sent a plastic bag down there, turning it into floss. They fixed it. When she passed, my aunt decided to "wash off some silver dollars"... leaving one to go into the can, blowing out the back of the can. It was replaced. Now, this one, 34 yrs later.
Thankfully, this one didn't die during the convention.
