Since I recently got a bench grinder, I've been polishing various vacuum parts as practice before I move on to actual vacuums. Unfortunately, the scratches are becoming more noticeable as the parts start to look nicer. What would be the best way to get the scratches out of the metal?

evan is right, however if it's really deep, i use a palm sander to get the gouge out then wetsand to sand it smooth and even the metal finish out.

i also use very low grit sandpaper starting out. about 120 grit, and work up to 2000 grit. i do 120 and 220 dry sand with a palm sander. 320,400,600,800,1000 and 2000 wet-sanding and steel wool for final polish.

Polishing

The only way to really do this is with a bench polisher and a let of practice and care they are hard to use

Here is the nozzle I'm polishing. I've manly been working on the edges with a bench grinder.

You can either do what Will says and use a regular sander or you can use the bench grinder with a different wheel/compound. I use a sisal wheel with an emery compound. The sisal wheel is a rougher buffing wheel and the emery is a harsher compound. It works pretty well for me.

I'll try the sisal wheel and emery compound method. I was actually planning on ordering some more bench grinder polishing supplies. Is there anything else that I should use for polishing?
