#2 is a GE Roll-Essy or a Westinghouse
#3 I think is a Rainbow
#4 is the white-top Lewt that I believe was the electronic one
#6 is an Atlas (did it have a name?)

#6 is a Universal.

I believe that was the Jet 88, or whichever one was the lesser model. The better of the “Jet” models had chrome trim, no wheels and a sliding control lever to diffuse the exhaust air through the sides. Also, the Atlas had large lettering spelling out the word “Atlas” on the side of the machine.

1.First floating Constellation.
2.Roll Easy.Later Westinghouse had top mount tool storage.
3.Rexair,soon to be called Rainbow.(Top became chrome in 1961.)
4.Probably Golden Lewyt.Electronic was later.
5.AE.First automatic Electrolux without ejector.
6.Jet 99.At times also seen as Regina and Atlas(with & without tail fins.)

Always wondered if attachments were available for the Singer Uprights of that era, and the picture of the Singer in the closet answers that for me. I have several of the vacs pictured, including the Hoover 84 Constellation, Electrolux AE, Hoover 64 Citation, Golden Lewyt 90, Hoover Pixie, and the next older version of the Westinghouse Canister. Love vacuums from the 50's!

I had the same Singer upright, and it didn't come with a hose or attachments. Wonder if that's the correct hose. I kind of doubt it.

Singer upright. I don't see any place for a hose. And as I recall there wasn't one. I could be wrong but check it out. What do you think?

Hose and attachments were available as seen in the closet of BH&G article.The hose converter went under the brush opening as it did through the 60s at Singer stores into the 90s when it was a WalMart vac.A 70s converter included storage for small attachments.Similar to Eureka,later Convertibles,Concept,etc.Singer also offered hand vacs with and without full attachment sets that may have been more popular the the UR atts.From POD ad you will see features explained that are forgotten and not seen today.Also note the separate bracket that would go on handle to allow vac to be hung from hook for storage.

1957—a Banner Year for Plug-In Floor/Surface Products & Misc

The magazine ad that started this thread actually featured 1956 models from what I know—with the caveat that I have seen floor & surface care ads that introduced next year models at the end of a year like the automotive industry. Two corresponding vacuum cleaner models are Electrolux Corporation's Model G (debuting nationwide in January 1961) and Kirby Company's Classic 1-CR (launched nationally in January 1970).


Following a list of identified '57 models (plus some consumables that were either introduced at the time or possibly earlier) that appeared for the first time in periodical advertising that year, or according to information posted at Vacuumland. Corrections or additions invited.

Capitalized color names were in advertisements or literature; uncapitalized are by observation.


Bissell (US), Bex-Bissell (UK)
•Models 202 (US)/? (UK) “Shampoo Master”—rug cleaner in Sandalwood and White with Bissell "Germ-Proofing Formula Rug Shampoo" (Bex Housewares, a division of The British Xylonite Co. Ltd.)

Electrolux (Canada) Ltd.
•Model BX10—Triple-Brush Floor Polisher in Jamaican Bronze and Cream
•Models ZB83, ZB86, ZB88—tank-type vacuum cleaners in Jamaican Bronze and Cream with new disposable filter bags (80 Series debut)

Electrolux (UK) Ltd.
•Models Z60 and Z62— tank-type vacuum cleaners in Red, Black, & White multi-fleck leatherette w/matching trim and Lt. Grey horizontal ribbed plastic w/Dark Green trim, respectively

Electrolux Corporation (US)
•Model F 'Fully Automatic'—tank-type vacuum cleaner in pale gray & ivory; automatic standard features include bag lock-out (introduced on late Model E-A) - bag needed to turn on, shut-off regulated by airflow efficiency dial (introduced in early 1954 on the Model LX), filter bag seal when removed (debuted on gray single-ply "wrappers" in 1952; new yellow 4-ply style in 1957), cord winder retraction (1949-25th anniversary year intro); some of the cleaner's features were previously optional at extra cost (note: the power nozzle, Model PN-1, debuted in the latter part of 1960)
• Part 4935 "Turbotool" accessory with Electrolux "Turbo Shampoo"—air-powered multi-use indoor & outdoor jobs initially in blue hammertone to match the Model E-A tank-type vacuum cleaner and later in the Model F color scheme.
