Found a Dial-a-Matic yesterday

First one of these I've owned. Built like a tank. Got this one at a local thrift store. It needed a drive belt. I got the belt on the way home, and after arrival I cleaned the machine up, put in a new D bag and installed the drive belt. Everything works fine. The brush roll on this takes the term "beater bar" to new heights. The D bag isn't overly large, is it? Don't yet know what I'll do with it.

Maybe not by today's standards, but when Hoover introduced this new bag type with the DAM in 1963, it was better than the Type C & Type W by leaps and bounds. At least dirt didn't spill all over the place when you changed the bag. That's a beautiful Dial-A-Matic you got, the base is in remarkable condition. Most of them got badly banged up because of the jerky power drive....

That is very nice. I don't think I've ever seen one that is all taupe. I think that is the color.

Looks like someone had that locked away in a vault. Hoover had a great color palette back in the day.

They had to have them. They had the BEST color combos. Not to mention all the names for them. Which....I'm not the one to ask. I can't remember my middle name some days! =0/

I "Think" the first power-drive was the blue one, with the little design on the front bag cover. But, I'm not sure.

I think I recall also seeing an orange power-drive as well.

Actually....

The first DAM with power drive was the model 1170 from 1969. It had the same color front panel only without the headlight.

They certainly were heavy machines......

They feel like someone poured concrete into the housing. However, there is much missed on these heavy old machines. =/

Hi Gary, thats a great Dial A Matic you found! I love them, although I don't have one quite as nice as yours in my collection.

the attachments are so

easy to attach and use. Nice suction. And, you WANT that.They also don't "catch" fringe on Oriental carpets. I DO prefer a convertible over tem, but, a great (yes, heavy) machine. But isn't that better than the plastic cr%p that's in stores now?
Just look at the condition of that vac.

This is German market 1124 that I am very pleased to have in my collection, I am not showing the attachments but the hose is similar to that used on the Brown/Pumpkin Portable
