When i found this in the trash the cord was cut and it was very dirty... And after a good cleaning and and tuning up it works great :)

I put a heavy duty lime green cord on it in the mean time im still on the hunt for an origional 3 prong brown cord and a brown pn, But the lime green cord is growning on me as it my favorite color.

Me and a fellow vacuum lover have name it the frankenqueen because of the geen cord and the pn from a newer fq from 2001

let know what you think please :)

Why thankyou :) The many hours of polishing the rusty like spots off the crome really payed off :)

and i think your right kevin im going to! i was bother me a bit that its not origional but it makes it differnt and unique like you said :)

Exactly....

and like you said, that color would surely grow on you. You'd be the talk of the next vac convention with that cord!

I'm pretty much a traditional LUX metal canister guy, but your vac in the first pic is just gorgeous! I even like the brown & chrome contrast.....

That's a nice freebie score there!! These old brown Filter Queen's are great vacuums....they may not have the world's greatest PN, but they do OK if you put the brushroll in the "worn" position, & they have good filtration, suction & power.

I wouldn't worry too much about the cord....unfortunately, unless you can find an old brown junker you can save the cord from, Filter Queen is discontinuing a LOT of the parts for the brown models :( . And of course, if the cord is available as a new genuine part, it will be pricey knowing how Filter Queen is. Oh, and so you know, the original power cord was 2 PRONG, not 3 prong.

About the brown powerhead....with this brown Filter Queen with the "marble" applique on the tub, there was actually 2 lighted PN's during it's run....first was a brown one with the same "marble" applique on top, & then they replaced that finish by making it's cover with a silver paint job, so that it had a "chrome" look to it. Both versions had a rubber decal that says "Filter Queen" on it. So, you could use either powerhead on it & make it look original.

One thing you could do, though, if you don't mind it becoming a TRUE frankenqueen & you dislike the powerhead, is replace the hose, wand & powerhead. You would do this by getting a new Filter Queen hose connector & then putting a generic Plastiflex (or other suitable) aftermarket hose on it. At that point, assuming you use a Plastiflex with gas pump handle, you could put a Eureka Sweep & Groom PN, Kenmore/Hayden PN, Wessell Werk EBK340....the list is endless. If you do use this as a daily driver, you may enjoy the on/off brushroll switch & better performance you would gain from the upgrades. And you can always put the used parts for sale on Kijiji to make some extra cash.

One last note....is the main motor original? You should be able to tell from looking at the motor, there should be a manufacture date on it. I find here in Ontario most brown Filter Queens by now have replacement motors in them....most of them have gotten to the age that the original carbons wore out, & unscrupulous vac shop owners tell the owner the entire motor needs replacing, rather than replacing the carbons. I think it's such a shame, as they are such durable & long-lasting motors. One modification you can make to increase suction & airflow, if the original motor is burnt out, is to replace it with a TriStar CXL Ametek motor. They are the same size, but due to it being a 7.5 amp, vs the original 6 amp FQ Ametek motor, they draw 90" Waterlift instead of 80".

Enjoy vacuuming with your Filter Queen! I have a Model 350 straight suction, 2 brown models, & a 2001 Limited Edition, the last of the "traditional" models, & it's amazing how well they clean!

Kevin, im going to keep the cord :) and im a HUGE metal lux canister guy too! i love electolux all togther lol on the top self of my stand is my 86 canadain metal lux ill post a picture :)

Rob, THANKYOU for all the information!

Are you sure its not a 3 prong cord? my aunt has one just like it and her's is 3 prong and i beleve its the origional cord... and if it is only suppose to be a 2 prong cord were do you hook up the ground wires under the crome top when hooking up a two prong cord?

also it is the origional motor witch is cool :) and if it does ever die i will deffently use the tri star motor!

yeah the power nozzle does kinda suck but its not used often i use my central vac mostly and when i do use it i only have a few area rugs so it does the job.

I have yet to see a brown Filter Queen that has a 3 wire cord & plug. Having said that, I have only seen the single-speed brown Filter Queen models, I have yet to see a 2-speed model, which do exist because they pop up on Ebay from American sellers from time to time. I think that for whatever their reason Filter Queen felt that Canadians were more practical & didn't need the second speed, just like Electrolux realized in the 1970's that us Canadians didn't necessarily feel that if a vacuum had a metal body, it was quality, & thus started offering the plastic AP series. But, if you DID have a 3 prong plug & cord on a Filter Queen, you could put it anywhere on the vacuum, just as long as it's touching metal. All it does is ground the vacuum for safety if you picked up water. My Filter Queen 350 from the early 1950's, brown woodgrain Model 700 with small Model 48 PN from the mid 1970's, & brown marble Model 700 with chrome lighted PN, they all have 2 prong brown cords & are original.

As for the powerhead's performance....if you take your metal rug plate off, there should be a yellow paper glued onto it on the underside with the instructions for belt & brushroll change. If you follow the instructions & set the brushroll to the second "WORN" position, it will make the bristles stick out a bit more & improve the performance quite a bit.

I am just like you though, Dylan, I prefer Electrolux, whether metal or plastic. Back a couple of years ago, I found a complete Model 88 without bumpers for $7.99 at Salvation Army in Barrie, Ontario. The caddies weren't with it, & the hose wasn't original & had a cracked handle, but it had it's wands, most of the tools & a near-full pack of genuine Electrolux 4-ply bags, so I took it up to the cashier & bought it immediately without hesitation!! I am currently restoring it now to it's former glory, & like you I need to find a good cloth hose for it.

Have a good night, Dylan....Rob

I dont think mine has a 2 speed motor, but my aunts might im not to sure ill have to take a look.

right now i have a 3 prong cord on it with the ground hooked up to the ground wire, but if i put a 2 prong cord on it i can just basically hook the ground wires attached/comeing from the metal hood and motor to anything basically?

and as for the power nozzle ill have a look at that and make sure its on the worn section, ive got the dial thing on the back set to as low as it can go,

awe you will have to post pic of you`re 88 when your all done with it :)
i aslo got my 86 at a thirft store (value village)

Thanks again for all your help :)

You found it in the trash?

People can be so foolish at times. The machine was dirty and missing a few pieces, so throw it away! What a waste. Like many of the high end brands from days gone by, a vintage Filter Queen that's cared for by its owner is a lifetime machine. There's quite literally nothing that can fail that can't be repaired at a reasonable price. So why toss it out? I love my Model 31, and I have no doubt that it'll still be working long after I'm gone, unless of course it falls into the wrong hands and they throw it out because it's too old.

As....

Rob said Dylan, just take your ground wire to anything chassis metal that's convenient for you. I really should get into Canadian LUX's ....you had your own models that paralleled our US models. Has anyone done a history piece...like what's been done for US models?

As far as LUX canister vacs....I will never make the comment that they are the best vacs in the world.  Have they for example, ever won overall in cleaning competition at any of the vac conventions?  But for whatever reason(s), they just do it for me in understated elegance.

The green cord is the best!!

Now that is cool thinking. I like the green cord!! Glad you saved it from the trash, you did a terrific job, cleaning up that Filter Queen and giving it a new life!!

As my knowledge of Filter Queens is very low--is the power nozzle that you paired with this a better model or any different from the original. I know the original would have had a metallic shiny hood with was appears to be a texture over the headlight. All of the agitators look the same across the Filter Queen models though.

Thanks!

I know! well it didnt look that pretty when i got it, it was quite dirty on the out side and the crome was quite a mess but after so hand polishing with car polish she came back better then new :)

and as for the ground there is already factory wires comeing from the metal hood and from the motor just IF i used a 2 prong cord the ground would become useless... so if i used a 2 prong cord were would i connect the factory ground wires? this is why i beleve its ment to have a 3 prong cord? my aunts does has a 3 prong cord:/

As for the power nozzle im not really sure if its better really. i just found it at the thrift store for $1,99 and got that for now insted of paying like $100 that the local vac shop wants for the one that would have came with it... im thinking of just painting this one brown to match because $100 seems like allot :/

thank you all for the great advice and comments :)
