Filter Queen 500 Call

I know
someone ouught to have there head checked especially after the
FQ31 disaster today!

What can I expect from a 500?

How old are they?

I don't know why I do these things
bet these are even harder to find parts for

but I have been wanting the older tools & hand wands so I figured what the heck if they come with a 500 or a 31.

I hope the 500 is not a whimpy sucker compared to the 31.

I lost a shot at a $9 one not too long ago
but it looked a bit on the worn side

Says its in EXC Cond
smooth quiet running

Was hoping to get this for under $20
OOh well no such luck as it was about twice that

Saw another a few months ago think it went in $50's
& it was just the vac so this wasn't bad

I have been talking with the seller who is a collector who has to give up his collection
So I figured if I;m going to get one might as well be from someone I think I can trust

Has replacement hose that's a bojack
but just hope its a good quality.

I need to try to striaghten out this dolly that I got today
Its now hexagonal

I tried to striaghten a wheel assembly on one that came bent
I couldn't
Maybe with a good vice?
Hope I can get this rounded out at least to get the gasket back on.

Such a travesty

The correct tools

That would be easy to fix with an automotive trim hammer and anvil. I use a set on all of the metal parts of the vacs.

Excellent advice, Tim. I use an anvil and various hammers, too. When no anvil is handy a brick or concrete block or two with a piece of maple plank can work wonders getting around those casters and flatten the bottom. (A bent-in Electrolux cordwinder mount frame from an XXX/LX is a familiar problem that can be re-shaped with patience and a few pry bars & vice jigs. The test is to stand the vacuum on end on the cordwinder and it stands tall & true.)

Christine, don't try it right away using pliers as the teeth will mess up the surfaces. Use the pliers to fine tune the flatness and curves after basic reshapping. You do at least have the rubber bumper trim for that base that will hide the inevitable distortions after straightening?

That's really unforgivable damage and shoddy thoughtless packing. We can see the too small box. Give that seller a real hard ass time over it. I'm surprised the tool ring isn't shattered to pieces.

Ring tool has chips but they were prior to shipping
as no parts in the box
No hinge either
Too bad.

I have the rubber piece
he had it on the bottom

would have been shipped rubber on it

The box was a 12 inch egg box turned inside out

I got a $26 credit
Half of the price of the vac
but it still won't even buy that hinge which I priced at $30

He should have mentioned it was missing a hinge
The picture was so small as not to see that

I tried with the other dolly
bricks hammer wood planks
also pliers

I gave up on that

I can see it can be done though

Still thats a 30 year old vac
I hate to see a dolly bent like a pretzel

I have the motor apar
well the motor housing
cleaned all the parts

the secondary was filthy

On off switch is ok
but the hi lo is busted
can't ec=ven switch it to low
This afternoon it did switch over but sidn't work on lo

I figured I;d better leave well enough alone & leave it on hi

Where can I get those hi lo switches
I need 2 of those now

I got everything all clean now
just have to work on the dolly & getting a hinge
& eventually a switch

I got all the attachements & a very worn powernozzle
but the motor in it is ok & it works so I did ok with parts

I got the vac with the credit for $26 which isn't bad
but the shipping was a killer
Still the thing came in 2 boxes with a weight total of 34 lbs
So it was heavy & that's the problem with vacs
they just are not cheap to ship
so you don't want to spend the money to ship a poor vacuum.

Least I washed all of that North Carolina dust out of it

There is some rust in bottom of cannister inside
thats the problrm with metal
but had it been plastic guess it would be in pieces.

The dolly was on top of the tool caddy so it saved it from the side blows & since it was squeezed so tight it didn;t shift to crack it.

Lucky its not in half & still has some use in it though
there are alot chips

Thaty hinge though really bothers me
Least I think thepart it attaches to is still there

It has a chrome hinge
I like that

Well, that motor looks a lot like your mystery motor. I'm starting to think a lot of older Lamb motors looked like this. I'm more familiar with something like this:

Talk about tight sqeeze

His tell sme he had it packed already
so my note with packaging concerns
could not be helped.

I would never pack like this
but if I was stupid enoough to
I would have taken it otu of that egg shell
& pack it more appropriately

He's a new seller
He was concerned about his feedback
Even offered to reimburse the entire price
but I couldn't feel right about that
so I said I;d take half
that I felt was fair
though not really commensary
as even if he didn't know how to pack
he has eyes & can count to 2

I'm not pleased about it coming with 1 hinge
Thats a serious flaw

It looks like the older filter queen motors
Thats a newer motor
I have one like that from what I think in a 86 D31X

I had the motor out

This one had pink brush holders though
My other 2 a 33 & Scotts 31 have red brush holders

I surmise the 70's FQ have this motor & somewhere along the line they dropped the extra metal & just caged the copper wires


This is the motor on the 31 I got from Scott
It could be a 1975
not sure if that numbber means anything
prob not as the one I got is no 1989 motor

Still there is value in the parts

I can get it fixed if I can get a hinge

OOh & its got this huge 3 prong wire plug on the end

Throw those DVC out
I may use one as double filter
they were letting alot of dirt thru the cone

Sec was really full
luckily it didn't go thru & I think they used good secondarys

Sad thing it the DVC Pack has a price tag of $15 on it

That's robbery for filters that ruin your vac

I don't like to bid on vacs that have been using bojack filters

I can't blame you for that. Usualy it does not bother me, but I can rebuild motors and stuff like that fairly easily so its not a big deal. For someone trying for a fairly clean starting point it would be something to consider.

Some cleaners like dirty air uprights (like Kirbys) it does not matter much as long as you vacuum out the cloth bag. Their motors are mostly uneffected by that kind of thing.

Now that I think about it a bit more, the last few vacuums I have bought don't use paper bags at all.

True though I have been thru alot of shakees
& the dirt in them is catastrophic
yet dirt has to go thru the fan to get to the bag

So maybe those motors are built differently

I have not opened a kirby motor casing yet
or been inside any other motor than a power nozzle

actually its not that bad if you got the tools

Looks like the FQ brushes are screwed in
& motor has 2 bolts

May try to take one apart one day
clean it out better
but the ones I have are not dirty
not like what I see in power nozzles

Guess they are sort of getting second hand soot

motor top is back together

triedto put the top onto a more modern brown cannister
so as to use that cannister & dolly do I have 2 clamps
& the clamps won't stay up & close
they are too long

Something is different in these older models
maybe gasket height or cannister height

It fits on the one I got from Scott as they are close in serial number
So guess theya re both areound 1978
but looks like someone changed the brushes as this unit is a slight higher number & should be the same red brush holders
unless they are heat faded

This motot top gets very hot

I can't really compare it with a my similar unit as that one only works on lo speed
so maybe hi speed gets hot

Its noticeably hot
hotter than any of my others & this is my 4th FQ

Had to fix the wire too
the sheathing was broken at the end
so I had to try to get that white clamp this off & then move the cord in & tape that section.
It should be fine under head as the inner wires looked ok

Beast to get that white clamp back in but finally did it

What a mess
I got units & only one is fully ok

I can make one good one out of the other 3

but I'm trying to make 2 so I will need parts

Darn I was really hoping to be able to use my newer can & dolly

Wonder why the clamps won't close?
they are too long

I switched put the gasket form the defunct base onto the one with good clamps & it does close now not great but closes
must be something in the newer gasket.

I thought all these parts were pretty interchangeable
but may not be.

Top metal really does get very hot
I've heard mention of this
but haven't notced it in my others
Also its really not that quuiet
I had to wash the foam baffle as I have none
its sponge in 3 sections not polyester type batting as in the newer

Upon closer inspection appears to be top part of clamp assembly missing doesn't match the other side.

That base may just be scrap.

fixed the dolly

bent it back on edge of a table
laid it flat & pressed with my wieght
did some bending shaping by hand
then fine tuned wuth vicegrips over metal covered with cloth so not to mar too much

I did it!!!

That is not easily bent steel. Proud of yer tenacity.

Now, to finesse those ripples to round, narrow down the gap of an adjustable flat jawed wrench to just fit over the rim. Ease it along to the ripples and twist/bend them, a little section at a time, into alignment with the circle. think of the wrench as a mini vice clamp.

In the absence of an anvil or pair of parallel jaw pliers, which not many folks have in their tool box.

It;s all together orig except I;m using the cannister of one of mine with the gasket switched

looks pretty good

caddy is pretty banged n scratched but in one piece
lol
has broken crevice tool holder & some more broken pieces but it will hold 2 attach

Only has 6.5 amps wo pn & 9 with pn
my first one has over 8.3 amps wo pn & 9.5 with pn

So newer ones are more powerful

The heat is in the exhaust
with the cap off it stays cool
but with it on the top gets really hot

Is the motor running hotter or perhaps that spongy material is not as good at letting out heat?
