Favorite vacuum store memories

We all have our memories of running down to the vacuum aisle to see what new vacuums were stocked out on the shelves. Anyone have any particular memories from a visit to a certain store? What was one vacuum (or more) that was on display that you really wanted? My best memory was going one night to our local (closed for over 10 years now) National Wholesale Liquidators out on Long Island. On their display that night they had 4 green Hoovers in a row, my favorites during that time. A translucent Hoover Windtunnel Plus, a Hoover Widepath Soft Guard 7 amp, a Hoover Twin Chamber 12 amp, and a Hoover Fold Away, which was the vacuum we had during that time actually. Vacuum store visits dont hit the same anymore.

There were lots. But my most favorite ones was visiting my old local vacuum store for the first few times. My first ever visit to that store we took our Panasonic MC-V7387 in from our first cabin because it had a switch problem, and I was all over the place including in the back repair room. Seeing so many Panasonic vacuums on display, I even got to play with some of them including one my buddy (the owner of the store) demonstrated to a customer. I also remember playing with a green Eureka The Boss Smart Vac that I think was the first year they've released them. There were a couple of black Eureka The Boss cordless stick vacs my younger brother and I got to play with. And I played with the MD SilentMaster unit on display with the Stealth 15 inch powerhead from a short 10 foot electric hose I think was for demo purposes. I remember a couple of customers brought their machines in to get looked at while we were waiting, one brought in a Hoover Steamvac and the other brought in a Electrolux upright. Last but not least was seeing some machines that were already in for repair. Some Sharps and Sanyos caught my attention. I also remember seeing a green Hoover Windtunnel self propelled in the bathroom for some odd reason. But one that became one of if not my first dream vacuum to get was a blue Panasonic Jet-Flo MC-6215.

Oh Boy

Alright, let’s see.

-There was an Oreck store in Hendersonville, so one memory is my family taking me to the store. I wanted to see the Oreck Platinum Pilot in action. The reason why is because I wanted to see if it had a cord. My reason for thinking this was that the commercials never showed a cord. (Well, one of them did; it was the one where the dogs were standing and the person was vacuuming the pet hair off the floor from where the dogs were standing.) I also got a photo by the David Oreck cut out. I revisited July of 2023, and the kicker was that the lady remembered me 11 years later (I first went in 2012). Unfortunately, this year my parents informed me that that Oreck store closed down. Bonus fact: Before I got my first job, I considered applying there. But they were never usually that busy.

-Me going down the Vacuum Isle at Walmart to look at and touch the vacuums also in 2012.

-There was an orange Electrolux Ergorapido that I wanted, once again, in 2012. I wanted it so much that my parents jokingly added “Orange Vacuum Cleaner” to their shopping list. While I never got that orange one, a few years later, I did receive the Black and Green one that was supposedly made from recycled plastics.

So basically, 2012 was the peak year for my interest in vacuums. I still miss 2012 Vacuums in general.

Favorite vacuum store memory

In 2013 I was taken to our local vacuum shop. I remember being so excited to look around the shop. The guy working behind the counter showed me to the back room with all their vacuums it was a great experience. I’ll never forget that day.

Somewhere deep in the fog of childhood memories are blurry images of a visit to Empire Electric in downtown Montreal in the early 1960’s - maybe 1961 or 1962. I was 2 or 3 years old and my dad took me with him to either order our Lagoon Blue Eureka 260 Super Automatic upright, or to pick it up. There was a display of vacuums to the left of the order counter, and all I can remember were all the colours!!! Yellow, blue, red, brown vacuums! Most likely Eurekas from Canada’s Onward Manufacturing plant in Kitchener, Ontario. I’m sure there were Canadian Hoovers from Hamilton, Ontario in that colourful display as well (Hoover had lots of colours in their line-up as well).

It’s amazing that 60 years later, I still remember that colourful array of vacuums at Empire Electric. If you search for Empire Electric Montreal on Google, I think a picture of the store will come up.
