Do the roller end caps have a lot of wear on them. Are the slots on the machine rounding out when they used to be square or other shape? Does the roller sit tight in the holders without the belt installed? If it rattles and you can move the roller left and right? See if you can turn one of the end caps as though you were trying to take them off. Just a turn or so, just to see if it sits more snug  in it's mounting.


If that works and the roller spins freely, then try installing the belt again. Also, if the belt is correct for your machine but is ridiculously hard to stretch on to the roller,try soaking the belt in hot water for about 15min.
