Hi all,

I'm trying to find out more information about an Irish brand of vacuum cleaners sold in Ireland in the 1960s, and wondered if any of you had come across them before?

The brand is called Fam, and I have found ads for two models of their vacuum cleaners in Irish women's magazines (images below). They were made in a factory in Wicklow called Couper Works, which seems to be Dutch-owned, also made washing machines, and opened some time between 1957 and 1961.

I literally don't know any other information about them - at first I thought that one was a rebadged Electrolux 64, but the clips don't seem to go all the way around the end. Any thoughts about whether these were designed and made locally, or rebadged European imports would be fantastic!

Update: I've actually found a lot more information, both from Irish and Dutch newspapers, including the location of the parent factory in Maarssen, The Netherlands. Again, any information anyone has on this brand (also called FAM in the Netherlands) would be fantastic, or indeed, any surviving examples?

Interesting looking machines. The tank type one looks alot like the machines made by Ruton in Holland. Even the same style of hose end.

Sorcha,

What interesting observations!

In the future, you might wish to add the following to your vac collection:
Kirby Dual Sanitronic 80 (1967-1969)
American-Lincoln Super-Sweep Mark I (1969-1972) (emerald green painted housing, white handle, bag and bumpers)
American-Lincoln Super-Sweep Mark II (1972-1979)
