Fairfax hose

Actually, =I= dooo

I have a nice S-1, the first model, but the hose has funky stuff on the motor end that won't come off. Some kind of black tar-like stuff. I've tried everything short of sandblasting it.

charles-Richard:

Have you tried using acetone? It dissolves all sorts of mysterious substances. I don't know if if you can still obtain M.E.K. in California, but that is even a more powerful solvent. These two have always been available at Home Depot in Texas, but our environmental laws are a bit lenient so I'm not sure what you have access to.

Laquer Thinner, or methyl ethyl ketone, or even MEK, is VERY dangerous! I would not suggest breathing too many fumes! Kind of like the paint you were talking about a while back, Charles! You never know what breathing that stuff can do! :-) Acetone will probably the best bet for the saftey concerns. Good luck!

~~K~~

Acetone did not work

and you cannot buy Methyl Ethyl Keytone (a horrific carcinogen btw) in California.

I also tried Bestine, rubber cement thinner, and it did not work either.

I even tried that "Tar Off" stuff, whatever it's called, for removing tar and bugs from auto radiators. Ditto.

Thanks, Mark! Just let me know what I owe you for it.

Goo Gone

is the same kind of stuff as Tar-Out. That kind of stuff just did not work. The black tarry stuff on the hose (both on the metal ring and about 1" of the hose) is hard and petrified. It just won't budge.

My Bad. I haven't bought M.E.K in a few years. I should figure out how to dispose of what I still have. BTW Charles-Richard: in your Great American Garage Clean-Up (page 3 photo 7), I see the Hamilton Beach, Hoover and Westinghouse, but what are the other two machines in the middle?

Cadillac and Air-Way

The bronze-colored machine is a Cadillac and the one to its right is an Air-Way. It is kind of a rare model I think, inasmuch as it has a more slender handle tan the black plastic (?) handle of the Air-Way Chief, and the handle is made of metal. This is the same handle that the twin-motor Air-Way had but this was not a twin-motor machine. I don't have any of the machines in that photo any more - they were all taken that day by lucky helpers.

btw, for those who don't know what he's talking about, see link. I do not have this section of my site listed on my portal page.

Then here's another one...

The first cleanup in the link above took place in 2001. The job that day was so big that we didn't really get it finished, so some of the crew came back a year later and we did finish.

Then of course I had to do it yet again last summer but it wasn't nearly as bad -- we had less people but it took less than a day to complete. Now, there's hardly anything out there anymore. I have photos of the last clean-up but haven't gotten around to putting them on a web page yet. Another of a million rainy day projects. I have SO much vacuum cleaner stuff to add to my site... will I ever get it done??

Charles - JetSetModern

Charles, is that the Fairfax we are talking about on JetSetModern? Is that gray cord original? Geez, I better send you a red cord also. I couldn't find an 8 foot box for the hose so I will gently curl it like a cobra into a smaller box.

Thanks Charles for setting me straight on the Cadillac. I love the styling of that machine. There was an older Cadilac at my favorite junk shop in Houston. I had to back away from it because it had been spray painted silver and had a $75 price tag. Yuk!

Jet Set Modern

???

Not sure what that is -- there are photos of my Fairfax, and the very bizarre floor polisher attachment, at the link below.

My Fairfax does have a gray cord. I had always assumed it was original but perhaps not.

Anyone know what the relationship is between Fairfax and Kirby? Don't know what I mean? Look at the hose and hose end -- the Fairfax hose end is identical to the earlier Kirby hoses except that the end is a little shorter. But it's the same exact design and has the same ridges and stuff on it.

Ohhh,

I had forgotten all about that site! Re the Fairfax, are you sure the gray cord is not original? And that even the early S-1 (1956) had a bumper around the bottom? Only reason I ask is, this machine came to me in practically brand-new condition. It had hardly been used at all. Some of the attachments were still in their plastic packaging. So I'd be surprised if the cord had given out so soon, and there was no bumper on it. But I know next to nothing about the Fairfax other than the early ones are really beautiful!

I know nothing.

Charles - I was just razzin' ya - I have no idea/knowledge base to suggest what is original and what is not - for any machine. I am just a scrap metal outfit (smile). But if you want to make it prettier, I am sending the trimmings. Take care (and think "Omaha in the fall" - smile).
