I think it was done for the low end models, the curved piece would just snap onto the shorter piece. Just a way to make the low end model more affordable would be my guess.

Actually, like Kirby, I love that short straight end. It is perfect for cleaning the car or tight areas.

I’ve always wondered about this too. I’ve only seen this short stubby handle on deep discount budget Princess models and on Eureka’s compact tub vac. And I can’t believe that there was that big a savings in cost not to include a regular hose with a regular handle on the end. I mean just having the extra administrative and production and assembly line work to have a separate style of hose would surely cancel any savings?

It really is a mystery to me…. maybe a curved handle could be an optional attachment ordered after you got the cleaner?

Eureka

EBay vac looks very nice and would be one of the last of this style.
This would have been a cost reduction for a basic model. As with cord length, handle grip, quality & quantity of attachments, trim & labels, etc features could be added or subtracted to meet a price point.Having the curved end snapped on the hose by customer was probably to allow a smaller box for easier shipping. The short end to have curved end added was not chrome and had a groove for lock ring on curved end.
