For a while I have been thinking of getting one of the Eureka mini uprights for my collection. New they are $50, but used ones turn up relatively often. Last weekend I found a yellow one at a yard sale so I got it. This one is a yellow model 402 from around 2002-2004 I'd guess. Unfortunately it had been used without a filter, so I had to clean it out. The fan was filled with hair. I also took apart the brush roll and washed the parts with bleach in hot water. The parts are drying now. I looked online and saw the filters are inexpensive, so I will get one to put in it.

I am amazed how tiny the motors are. The brush roll motor is actually a DC powered motor of 11.5 amps and uses a cogged belt to drive the brush. It doesn't seem that part was meant to be serviced easily, but brush rolls and belts are available online.

I really like how these almost seem like a 'toy' vacuum. The two motor system is also interesting in a machine this small. The only thing I don't think I like is the suction motor seems to be very loud.

I had the Electrolux Boss branded one many many years ago. A great little upright and a shame Electrolux don't make them any more for sale in the UK. The dust bins are tiny but I adored the built in scraper for the filter.

The brush roll was better for hard floors than switched off though. I found its ideal replacement nearly 2 years ago with a brand new Z411 bagless design that still sells in the U.S, I think with a bag under the Sanitaire name.

The Z411 has a lot more power and reminds me of a super thin SEBO as it can go flat.

I would love to get the bagged version of that upright. Maybe I will some day.
The only thing I don't like about the silver one I have is that the cord length is a bit short and has fixed hooks on the rear so it takes a bit long to take off the cord. Also the dust brush has a terrible habit of falling off.

Yep I was referring to the Sanitaire model - Electrolux are missing a big trick here. They'd sell well if they were considered in the UK.

Used to

I used to have one of those sanitaires, it was blue. It seemed to perform well my dyson dc-17 picked up nothing but a bit of carpet fluff after it. It's airflow isn't too great, i think it read in at a 1.5-2 on the baird meter. It's brushroll was where it got a lot of it's deep cleaning power from. i didn't care for the sound of the suction motor, it has that high pitch whine to it. I ended up giving it to a friend of mine who didn't have a vacuum.
